Hello, another day, another coin. Today we have something a bit more exotic – a piece of silver from North Africa, or more specifically, Egypt. Thanks to my interest in collecting, I’ve learnt the Cyrillic alphabet, as well as Muslim dates, as a large number of coins feature them. One fine day, I sat down and started learning, as I was getting tired of searching for coins in catalogues. Thanks to my knowledge of Islamic dating and a strong grasp of heraldry, I’ve cut the time spent searching for information on coins by about 90%. I bought this coin in Gdańsk, at the very popular Dominican Fair, where you can find me every year. # Egypt 1 pound 1978 FAO, Food and Education for All This is an Egyptian 1 pound coin from 1978, a commemorative coin linked to the FAO. The theme is food and education for all, so the subject matter here is somewhat different from what usually appears on coins. There is no portrait of a ruler, no huge coat of arms covering most of the coin, no lion, no eagle, nor any military scene. Instead, there is science and agriculture, which actually suits a country like Egypt quite well, as land, water supplies and food have always been of immense importance there. You only need to look at the history of the Nile to realise straight away that without crops, this country wouldn’t look the way it does. The coin isn’t very old, as 1978 isn’t exactly the Middle Ages, but it’s still got some age on it and, to me, it’s a lovely, exotic piece of silver. It’s also nice that we have two dates here: 1978 and 1398 according to the Islamic calendar. Things like that used to really annoy me, because you’d look at a coin and not even know which year it was from, but now it’s the opposite. When I see these numbers, it’s immediately quicker, simpler and without the constant guessing from photos in a catalogue. That’s precisely why learning these dates made sense, because with Arabic coins it really, really saves a lot of time. On one side we have a figure at a microscope, next to some maize and ears of grain. The design is quite unusual, but it doesn’t look bad. It’s a bit simplistic, a bit propagandistic, but in this case it actually makes sense, because the coin’s theme concerns food, science and work in agriculture. I actually quite like it, because at least you know straight away what it’s about, and you don’t have to strain to find the meaning in five tiny characters somewhere near the edge. On the other side, we have Arabic inscriptions, the one-pound denomination and both dates. For many people, this side will probably be less legible, but visually it looks quite good, particularly thanks to the decorative Arabic script, which in itself serves as an interesting decoration. My specimen looks rather nice. It is not a coin from circulation in the sense of old marks or guilders; it looks more like a commemorative coin that was likely set aside rather than carried about in pockets. There is a shine to it, a bit of patina, and the whole thing does not look worn out. With a fineness of 720, a weight of 15 grams and a diameter of 35 mm, this is no flimsy little disc, but a proper coin that feels substantial in the hand. It may not be the most beautiful coin in the world, but as an exotic piece of silver from Egypt, it comes across really well. Dzięki mojemu zainteresowaniu kolekcjonerstwem nauczyłem się cyrylicy, ale też dat muzułmańskich, gdyż duża ilość monet je ma. Któregoś pięknego dnia usiadłem i zacząłem się uczyć, gdyż nużyło mnie szukanie monet po katalogach. Dzięki znajomości datowania muzułmańskiego oraz wysokiej znajomości heraldyki, skróciłem czas na poszukiwanie informacji o krążkach o jakieś 90%. Tematem jest żywność i edukacja dla każdego, więc mamy tutaj trochę inną tematykę niż zwykle pojawia się na monetach. Nie ma portretu władcy, ogromnego herbu na większość monety, lwa, orła czy jakiejś sceny wojskowej. Jest za to nauka i rolnictwo , co w sumie nawet pasuje do takiego kraju jak Egipt, bo tam od zawsze ziemia, zapasy wody i jedzenia miały ogromne znaczenie. Wystarczy spojrzeć na historię Nilu i od razu wiadome jest, że bez upraw ten kraj nie wyglądałby tak, jak wyglądał. Moneta nie jest bardzo stara, bo 1978 rok to nie średniowiecze, ale ma już swój wiek i dla mnie jest to taki przyjemny egzotyczny kawałek srebra. Fajne jest też to, że mamy tutaj dwie daty, czyli 1978 oraz 1398 według kalendarza muzułmańskiego. Kiedyś takie rzeczy mocno mnie irytowały, bo człowiek patrzył na monetę i nie wiedział nawet, z którego jest roku, a teraz jest odwrotnie. Jak widzę takie cyfry, to od razu jest szybciej, prościej i bez ciągłego zgadywania po zdjęciach w katalogu. Właśnie dlatego nauka tych dat miała sens, bo przy monetach arabskich oszczędza to naprawdę, ale to naprawdę dużo czasu. Na jednej stronie mamy postać przy mikroskopie, obok kukurydzę oraz kłosy zboża. Projekt jest dość nietypowy, ale nie wygląda źle. Jest trochę prosty, trochę propagandowy, ale w tym przypadku akurat ma to sens, bo temat monety dotyczy żywności, nauki i pracy nad rolnictwem. Podoba mi się to nawet, bo przynajmniej od razu wiadomo, o co chodzi, a nie trzeba szukać na siłę znaczenia w pięciu małych znakach gdzieś przy rancie. Na drugiej stronie mamy arabskie napisy, nominał jednego funta oraz obie daty. Dla wielu osób taka strona będzie pewnie mniej czytelna, ale wizualnie wygląda całkiem dobrze, szczególnie przez ozdobne arabskie pismo, które samo w sobie robi za nawet ciekawą dekorację. Mój egzemplarz prezentuje się przyjemnie. Nie jest to moneta z obiegu w takim znaczeniu jak stare marki czy guldeny, bardziej wygląda na monetę okolicznościową, która raczej leżała odłożona niż chodziła po kieszeniach. Widać połysk, jest trochę patyny i całość nie wygląda na zmęczoną. Srebro próby 720, waga 15 gramów i średnica 35 mm sprawiają, że nie jest to jakiś mały blaszak, tylko normalny krążek, który czuć w ręce. Może nie jest to najpiękniejsza moneta świata, ale jako egzotyczne srebro z Egiptu wypada naprawdę dobrze.
