Plot

The anime begins in a futuristic world where we meet our protagonist, Akira Himegami, a young adult who lost his family at a young age and was raised in the home of one of his old friends, who also has a daughter named Towasa Ōmaki, a genius girl who has revolutionized the world of technology from a very young age thanks to her great inventions. Her specialty is AI (Artificial Intelligence), and her latest and most sought-after invention aims to bring a new species of 100% synthetic and intelligent beings into the world. However, her safety will be in danger as the date of its launch approaches. On top of all this, we also have Akira's confession of love to Towasa.

The truth is that I was planning to talk to you about another science fiction anime that I also watched last fall, but since it hasn't finished airing yet, I decided to leave it for later. I chose this anime because it was one of the ones I liked the most—or at least didn't dislike—of all the science fiction anime I watched at the end of last year. It's surprising to see how they continue to give opportunities to works of this style, even though most of them don't manage to be as entertaining as one would hope. When they mix science fiction with other genres such as romance, slice of life, or comedy, it loses some of its appeal. I don't know, maybe it's just me, having grown up watching more post-apocalyptic science fiction works full of action and well-crafted plots. If I see that a science fiction anime doesn't have any of these elements, my interest in watching it decreases dramatically, and sometimes I only end up watching it for reasons other than simple science fiction. That's why, when I got to see the first and great episode of Dusk Beyond the End of the World, I was quite excited by the incredible premise it offered at the beginning. It had everything I mentioned already, with the added bonus of romance and drama to boot.

La verdad es que pensaba hablarles de otro anime de ciencia ficción que vi también en la pasada temporada de otoño, pero como aún no ha terminado su emisión, decidí dejarlo para después. Escogí este anime por ser uno de los que más me gustaron -o menos me llegaron a desagradar- de todos los animes de ciencia ficción que vi a finales del año pasado. Es sorprendente ver cómo le siguen dando oportunidad a obras de este estilo, aunque la mayoría no consigue ser tan entretenida como uno espera que sean. Cuando mezclan la ciencia ficción con otros géneros como el romance, el Slice of Life o la comedia, pierde un poco el gusto. No sé, tal vez y solo sea yo que crecí viendo obras de ciencia ficción más post-apocalípticas y repletas de acción y tramas bien elaboradas. Si veo que un anime de ciencia ficción no posee alguno de estos elementos, mi interés por verla se disminuye drásticamente y a veces solo la llego a ver por otro motivo más allá de la simple ciencia ficción. Por eso, cuando llegué a ver el primer y gran episodio que se emitió de Dusk Beyond the End of the World, me emocioné bastante por la increíble premisa que ofrecía al principio. Tenía todo lo que les mencioné ya, con el aditivo del romance y el drama, para colmo.

The episode begins as if we were going to see a typical love story between two young people who have known each other since childhood and all that. However, we can see the theme of technology, advances in AI, and the work of Towasa Ōmaki as the origin of everything we will see later on. We also see a futuristic world that is close to an unparalleled stage where technology will merge with humans to such an extent that they will not use any equipment to access everything it offers and thus connect the whole world. El episodio inicia como si pareciera que fuéramos a ver una típica historia de amor entre dos jóvenes que se conocen desde niño y todo eso. Sin embargo, podemos notar el tema de la tecnología, los avances con la IA y el trabajo de Towasa Ōmaki como el origen de todo lo que llegaremos a ver más adelante. Vemos también un mundo futurista y cercano a una etapa inigualable donde la tecnología se fusionará con el ser humano hasta tal punto de que no utilizarán ningún equipo para acceder a todo lo que esta ofrece y así conectar a todo el mundo. I'm not going to lie, the first few episodes of this anime were fantastic and kept me glued to the screen. P.A. Works already knows how to tell and develop good stories in most of its adaptations, but this time it managed to mix various elements of science fiction with a romantic and tragic story in this original work. I'm already fascinated by the theme of post-apocalyptic worlds with dystopian societies, but the subplot of Akira searching for his beloved Towasa in the midst of this world where historical information is strictly forbidden is even more captivating. And while it's true that the beginning of this anime is indeed excellent, as the episodes progressed, my interest began to wane after they started adding things like polygamy in this futuristic society and other somewhat questionable traditions. Mind you, both the action and romance scenes are excellent. But after that great love story at the beginning of the story, it's a bit awkward to see how they bring in other characters and form a somewhat strange love triangle. The anime doesn't lose its pace, as we always see some development and progress in our protagonist's quest.

No les voy a mentir, los primeros episodios de este anime fueron fantásticos y me mantuvieron muy enganchado en la pantalla. De por sí que P.A. Works sabe contar y desarrollar buenas historias en la mayoría de sus adaptaciones, esta vez se las ingenió para mezclar varios elementos de ciencia ficción con una historia romántica y trágica en esta obra original. Ya el tema de mundos post-apocalípticos con sociedades distópicas es algo que me fascina ver, pero la subtrama que le metieron de Akira en busca de su querida Towasa en medio de este mundo donde prohíben drásticamente ofrecer información histórica es algo que engancha aún más. Y si bien es cierto que es efectivamente excelente el inicio que nos da este anime, con el paso de los episodios posteriores, mi interés empezó a dispersarse luego de que empezaron a agregar cosas como la poligamia en esta sociedad futurista y otras tradiciones un tanto cuestionables. Ojo, tanto sus momentos de acción como de romance son excelentes. Pero luego de dados esa gran historia de amor al principio de la historia, es un tanto incómodo ver cómo meten a otros personajes y forman un triángulo amoroso un tanto extraño. El anime no pierde el ritmo ya que siempre vemos cierto desarrollo y avance en la búsqueda que tiene nuestro protagonista.

On the other hand, among its positive points, this anime has very good characters, starting with its protagonists Akira and Towasa, whom we have talked about more than enough. But we also meet other characters such as the combat android, Yügure, whom we are introduced to in a very striking way. Not only is she powerful, but she also has a conscience and the apparent ability to feel deep emotions such as love. Her face is similar to Towasa's, which gives her that mysterious touch of having some connection to Akira's fiancée.

Sin embargo, también tengo que admitir que hay ciertos detalles que siento que le faltaron a este anime. Al principio vemos cómo la organización que está controlando a la sociedad humana en este futuro distópico se comporta de una forma bastante extremista. Pero luego no sabemos más de ellos en episodios enteros. Cuando vuelven a aparecer es en momentos muy contados, haciendo que esa presencia antagonista sea bastante inexistente en la serie. Entiendo que le den tiempo a los temas amorosos y a los misterios que van revelando poco a poco. Pero tampoco es para descartar por completo un enemigo que podía ofrecer más. Por otro lado, entre sus puntos positivos, este anime tiene muy buenos personajes, empezando por sus protagonistas Akira y Towasa de quienes hemos hablado más que suficiente. Pero también conocemos a otros personajes como la androide de combate, Yügure, a quien conocemos por medio de una muy llamativa introducción que le dan. No solo es poderosa, sino que también posee conciencia y la aparente capacidad de sentir emociones profundas como lo es el amor. Su rostro es similar al de Towasa, lo cual le da ese toque misterioso de tener alguna relación con la prometida de Akira.

While on the one hand we don't have much development in terms of what we would expect from this post-apocalyptic and dystopian world, on the other hand we have a lot of development in terms of love and interpersonal relationships between two or more people. I don't like this anime's distorted version of love and marriage at all, which is why I prefer to stick with the traditional couple from the beginning or the one we end up seeing in one of the last episodes. Speaking of the ending, this anime also has some pretty shocking plot twists.

También tenemos la aparición de otros personajes como Amoru, una chica de este futuro distópico que le gusta dibujar y que su deseo es convertirse en creadora de libros ilustrados infantiles, como sus padres. Su introducción y desarrollo es el que menos me agradó de todos, no tanto por su historia o su personalidad, sino por su obsesión con esa tradición que tienen de casarse en grupos de tres o más personas en esta sociedad futurista. Como ya notaron, supongo, el anime no deja de retomar temas como el amor, el paso del tiempo y la posibilidad de que un ser sintético pueda amar y tener pareja. Si bien por un lado no tenemos mucho desarrollo en cuanto a lo que esperaríamos de este mundo post-apocalíptico y distópico, por otro lado tenemos mucho desarrollo en lo que respecta al amor y las relaciones interpersonales entre dos o más personas. Esta versión tergiversada del amor y el matrimonio que nos muestra este anime no me agrada en lo absoluto, por eso prefiero quedarme con la pareja tradicional del principio o con la que terminamos viendo en uno de sus últimos episodios. Y hablando del final, este anime también cuenta con unos giros de trama que son bastante impactantes.

I should warn you that if you're mainly interested in the post-apocalyptic and dystopian theme, you might be a little disappointed. But if you're into the romantic and dramatic theme, you might like it.

Hay un en especial que, literalmente, cambia por completo la percepción que le tenía al personaje en particular del cual se habla. Al conocer la historia y el origen del apocalipsis que casi acaba con toda la humanidad, caemos en cuenta que este anime no solo trata de gente enamorada. El tema de la tecnología y de los riesgos que ésta conlleva, no solo a una persona, sino a toda una sociedad es llevado al total extremo en este anime. Es evidente que los que escribieron el guión de esta serie se inspiraron un poco en clásicos y grandes referentes del género de la ciencia ficción como lo es Terminator, por ejemplo. Esto, fuera del tema romántico y poliamoroso que nos pinta en gran parte de su historia, me gusta bastante. Más que nada porque, entre todo lo que vemos y descubrimos al final, notamos cómo varias disputas, desacuerdos y temas pendientes terminan por resolverse de una forma muy llamativa. Claramente, no daré más detalles de dicho final para evitar spoilers, así que si les interesa lo suficiente, pueden ir a verla al terminar de leerme. Solo les advierto que, si van principalmente por el tema post-apocalíptico y distópico, puede que se decepcionen un poco. Pero si van por el tema romántico y dramático, tal vez les guste.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of Dusk Beyond the End of the World. For those who don't know them, P.A. Works studio is one of the great references in modern animation thanks to various adaptations and popular projects. While they always do work that doesn't disappoint, this time I admit that they really caught my attention due to the excellent animation, drawing style, and traditional artistry they employ in this work. The character design is excellent, as is the light color palette and the use of light and shadow. The same goes for the visual effects. Especially when it comes to action scenes, they stand out above all else, giving us an excellent audiovisual spectacle. The fluidity and the movement and transition effects are not bad at all. Something I like to see in this anime, at least at the beginning, is the lack of censorship when it comes to showing us some gore and graphic scenes. The shots and aerial views of the places we see throughout the series are also fascinating, especially because of its post-apocalyptic style. The sound effects aren't bad either, but they don't compare at all to this anime's soundtrack. Anyway, I leave this original series for lovers of dystopian and romantic stories. Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 in terms of the science fiction, romance, and drama genres.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual de Dusk Beyond the End of the World. Para los que no los conozcan, el estudio P.A. Works es de esos grandes referentes de la animación moderna gracias a distintas adaptaciones y proyectos populares. Si bien siempre hacen un trabajo que no decepciona, esta vez admito que llegaron a llamar bastante la atención debido al excelente trabajo de animación, estilo de dibujo y arte tradicional que manejan en esta obra. El diseño de los personajes es excelente, al igual que la paleta de colores claros y el uso de luces y sombras. Lo mismo sucede con los efectos visuales que posee. Sobre todo al momento de mostrarnos acción, se destacan por sobre todo dándonos un excelente espectáculo audiovisual. La fluidez y los efectos de movimiento y transiciones no están para nada mal. Algo que me gusta ver de este anime, al menos al principio, es la nula censura que posee al momento de mostrarnos algo de gore y escenas gráficas. Los planos y vistas aéreas de los lugares que vemos a lo largo de la serie son fascinantes también, sobre todo por ese estilo post-apocalíptico que tiene. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, pero no se comparan para nada con la banda sonora que tiene este anime. En fin, les dejo esta serie original para los amantes de lo distópico y romántico. Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de ciencia ficción, romance y drama.
