I believe trying to stick with ONE game of any genre is a titanic task, you may end up liking one thing from one but missing another from another, or can't choose between two, or three, or four… I think you get the idea. That's why when I saw the theme of the best/worst shooter I have played, my first question was "do I choose the best or the worst?", and the truth is, I haven't had the displeasure of playing a shooter that I remember as bad or that I didn't like, so the decision wasn't difficult, the next question was "which of all the good shooters I've played do I choose?", and that's where it gets tricky. Each game must be judged in its context, obviously Titanfall 2 will have better controls than, for example, GoldenEye 007 (not to mention the framerate), but comparing them would be unfair to the good ol' GoldenEye, one of my favorites of all time and that, despite not having aged so well, I still play it today.

But let's talk about the heavyweight that I decided to choose for this top, and it couldn't be anything less than one of the installments of what for many is the best franchise in terms of first-person shooters, Doom, which celebrated its 30-year history last December, no less. And I don't know why I'm being so mysterious when the name is already in the title, so let's get straight to the point. I chose Doom Eternal because I believe there is no better first-person shooter than this one, or at least I haven't played one, so I'll stick with this for now. For some, Doom Eternal was a disappointing sequel to the magnificent Doom 2016, the return of the father of shooters to the industry in grand style. As UltimoPlayer said, "Doom 2016 is a toy box, while Doom Eternal is a toolbox", it's a power fantasy that unlike other games, you must earn by learning to play properly and facing the game as if it were a puzzle. Each enemy typically has a weakness to a specific type of weapon, mechanics break down if you use the shotgun's automatic fire, just as the muscular enemies melt with plasma shots, and the BFG… the BFG kills almost everything. For those not familiar with what makes Doom Eternal so wonderful, it is a game that features something no Doom had until now, an essential and highly demanding three-dimensional mobility that you must take full advantage of if you want to survive. Yes, in previous games there was "circle strafing" to control crowds and defeat enemies, here you have to dash around the map while constantly moving, switching weapons according to the enemy, and obviously performing "glory kills" to constantly regain your life. I would say that this system, which was also in Doom 2016, is part of what makes the encounters in the game so intense. You can't avoid getting hit occasionally, but you can always heal yourself by eliminating everything that comes near you. So, it's up to you to heal faster from the damage they can cause in order to survive, or simply know how to move very well. I'm not going to get into the story because personally, in Doom, it has never been relevant. Yes, this "Reboot" that ID Software has done with Doom 2016 and Eternal has focused more on giving a story and lore to the world and the Doom Slayer, but I am still struggling to understand it since I still need to play some of the downloadable content, and that's where I want to get to: everything the game offers you beyond a campaign. Doom Eternal has two story expansions beyond its campaign, The Ancient Gods Part 1 and 2, I have only played the first part but it only enhances the campaign gameplay to the fullest, you start with all weapons and must continue doing what you already learned throughout the campaign, the same reason why it is recommended to play the campaign first. It also has a kind of asymmetric multiplayer where one player is the Doom Slayer and the rest are demons, but I have not tried this nor the Horde Mode as they encourage you to finish both parts of Ancient Gods first to avoid spoilers, so I will not talk about this section of the game for now, but I am confident that at the very least it will be entertaining. In addition, the game has battle passes each season that allow you to unlock skins completely for free, simply by playing and completing missions, something that I appreciate because although you can buy everything with the deluxe edition, I prefer to unlock everything by playing little by little. I cannot leave out the soundtrack, which is simply wonderful. You may have heard The Only Thing They Fear is You at some point, and if not, look it up, it's very good. Creo que intentar quedarte con UN juego de cualquier género es una tarea titánica, puede pasar que te guste una cosa de uno pero extrañes otra de otro, o no puede decirte entre dos, o tres, o cuatro… creo que se entiende a lo que voy. Es por eso que cuando vi la temática del mejor/peor shooter que yo haya jugado, mi primera pregunta fue “¿elijo el mejor o el peor?”, y la verdad es que no he tenido el disgusto de jugar un shooter que recuerde como malo o que no me haya gustado, así que la decisión no fue difícil, la pregunta siguiente fue “¿cuál de todos los buenos shooters que he jugado escojo?”, y aquí entra lo complicado. Cada juego debe ser juzgado en su contexto, evidentemente Titanfall 2 tendrá mejores controles que, por ejemplo, GoldenEye 007 (y ni hablemos del framerate), pero compararlos sería injusto para el buen GoldenEye, uno de mis favoritos de la vida y que, a pesar de no haber envejecido tan bien, lo sigo jugando a día de hoy.

Pero hablemos del peso pesado que decidí elegir para este top, y no podría ser nada menos que una de las entregas de la que para muchos es la mejor franquicia en cuanto a shooters en primera persona, Doom, que el pasado diciembre celebró sus 30 años de historia, casi nada. Y no sé para qué ando con tanto misterio si ya está el nombre en el título, así que vamos de una vez al grano, decidí escoger Doom Eternal porque considero que no hay un shooter en primera persona mejor que este, o al menos yo no lo he jugado, por lo que me quedaré con este de momento. Para algunos Doom Eternal fue una secuela decepcionante del magnífico Doom 2016, la vuelta del padre de los shooters a la industria por la puerta grande, pero en mi humilde opinión, si no te gusta Doom Eternal mejor ve a jugar a tus tres horas de campaña del CoD. Como dijo UltimoPlayer, "Doom 2016 es una caja de juguetes, mientras Doom Eternal es una caja de herramientas", es una fantasía de poder que a diferencia de otros juegos, debes ganarte a pulso aprendiendo a jugar correctamente y enfrentando el juego como si fuera un puzzle. Cada enemigo suele tener debilidad hacia un tipo específico de arma, los mecánicos se desarman si usas el disparo automático de la escopeta, así como los musculosos se derriten con los disparos de plasma, y la BFG… la BFG mata casi todo. Para quien no tenga mucha idea de qué hace tan maravilloso a Doom Eternal, es un juego que cuenta con algo que ningún Doom tenía hasta el momento, una movilidad tridimensional indispensable y muy exigente que debes aprovechar al máximo si deseas sobrevivir, y sí, en juegos anteriores existía el “circle strafing” para hacer control de masas y acabar con los enemigos, aquí debes hacer dashes por todo el mapa mientras no dejas de moverte, cambiar de arma según el enemigo y obviamente haciendo “glory kills” para recuperar tu vida constantemente. Diría que este sistema, que también estaba en Doom 2016 es parte de lo que hace tan intensos los encuentros dentro del juego, no puedes evitar que te toquen ocasionalmente, pero siempre puedes curarte eliminando todo lo que se te acerque, por lo que depende de ti curarte más rápido del daño que pueden causarte para así sobrevivir, o simplemente saberte mover muy bien. No voy a entrar en historia porque personalmente en Doom nunca ha sido relevante, y sí, este “Reboot” que ha hecho ID Software con Doom 2016 y Eternal se ha enfocado más en darle una historia y lore al mundo y al Doom Slayer, pero yo sigo batallando para entenderla ya que aún me falta jugar parte del contenido descargable, y es ahí donde quiero llegar, todo lo que el juego te ofrece más allá de una campaña. Doom Eternal posee dos expansiones de historia más allá de su campaña, The Ancient Gods Parte 1 y 2, yo solo he jugado la primera parte pero no hace más que llevar al máximo la jugabilidad de la campaña, empiezas con todas las armas y debes seguir haciendo lo que ya aprendiste a lo largo de la campaña, mismo motivo por el cual se recomienda jugar primero a la campaña. También tiene una especie de multijugador asimétrico donde un jugador es el Doom Slayer y el resto son demonios, pero tanto esto como el Modo Horda no lo he probado pues te incentivan a que termines primero ambas partes de Ancient Gods para evitar spoilers, por lo que no hablaré de este apartado del juego de momento, pero tengo certeza de que como mínimo estará entretenido. Además, el juego tiene pases de batalla cada temporada que te permiten desbloquear skins de forma completamente gratuita, simplemente jugando y completando misiones, algo que a mi parecer es de agradecer pues aunque puedes comprar todo con la edición deluxe, yo prefiero desbloquear todo jugando poco a poco. No puedo dejar por fuera la banda sonora que es simplemente maravillosa, probablemente hayan escuchado alguna vez The Only Thing They Fear is You, y si no, búsquenla, es muy buena, pero no soy experta en música así que no puedo decir mucho más.
