I have spent most of my day doing personal project time! I have been studying hard on volumetrics and how.. to do them well. It's animatable so far.

Rendering is working with Zdepth. I really really miss material overrides for #Eevee..... But it's working. Compositing should be cleaner now. Even at 128 samples, it's near silky smooth. @brentpatterson

Ok. after some short digging, material overrides for #eevee are still out, but Zdepth on volumes are still in! If your computer can't render higher than 256 samples -;) Just to give you an idea, with Zdepth

32 Samples on render at 25% 1080pHD 128 Shadow and Volumetric samples 8 M clipped to 4 layer chunks Mask blur is only around 5 pixels, so you can see the layers. Conclusion: You need even distributed samples.
