I am going to war
Some things are worth
Much fighting for
I am going to war
Some people are so important
I care about them more
They can’t defend themselves
So I will go to war
Image Description: Canada’s Parliament Hill as viewed from the Ottawa River looking up the cliff through the trees. The Peace Tower displaying the Canadian Flag and the round gothic structure of the Library of Parliament are shadowed by two towers of Center Block. The stonework is tan, the buildings are roofed with copper some brown, some oxidized to green.
This poem was written in high school as part of preparations for the Royal Canadian Legion’s yearly poetry competition. I thinking about why someone would fight even if they did not typically want to or liked to choose violence and this is what came to mind. That they had someone they cared about who was vulnerable so they would do what they had to do even if it wasn’t they would choose if there were other options.
