Chris Froome all but secures his general classification victory in the 2017 Vuelta a España, with Alberto Contador taking the stage victory on his final grand tour.
Froome finished third on today's stage, and all that remains for the Brit to secure a historic first Vuelta victory for the rider is for him to safely navigate tomorrow's flat stage into Madrid. It will also be the first time a British rider has achieved the Tour de France-Vuelta double.
Contador capped off his successful career with one final Grand Tour win in his last race before retirement, also making it the first win for a Spanish rider in the 2017 Vuelta. The Trek rider attacked at the bottom of the punishing Alto de l’Angliru to create a memorable solo performance.
Team Sky domestique Wout Poels led home Froome to ensure a 2nd and 3rd place finish on the stage, extending Froome's lead at the top of the GC.
