We're six years removed from this adventure, but there are a few truths that are embedded in my memory. One is that you'll spend more currency the first day you're in a new area. I preferred to have a place reserved in advance so I'd go for the price point. Then after a few days of scouting I'd find a better spot. Sometimes cheaper and offering incentives or specials.
Most people in the hospitality industry, hotels in particular speak English. English is not only the colonial lingo, it's the language of commerce. Often when Europeans visit South eastern Asia they speak some manner of English. The locals usually seem very happy to speak English or maybe it was just my charming personality. I always learn to give thanks and ask for the toilet wherever I visit.
The locals are also exploited in the tourist areas. I've seen it and I know the feel of it. If they know better they don't show it, but some do. I could feel that too.
