Smart Swaps In Your Everyday Diet Plan By David Andrews
As someone who is suffering from diabetes, it’s important that you take a look at your diet on a regular basis and see where you might be able to make a few smart swaps to get your diet as optimized as possible.
Sometimes one or two foods have slipped under your radar and could be causing you problems.
But, the good news is that with a little creativity, you can find some smart substitutions for these items and get back on track.
Here are a few smart swaps you’ll want to consider making.
- Almond Butter Instead Of Cream Cheese
Cream cheese is generally not the healthiest of options as not only can it be high in sugar if you are purchasing a fruit flavored variety, but it’s also relatively high in saturated fat as well.
Instead, try some natural almond butter. This is a great source of healthy fats, relatively low in sugar, and offers some blood sugar stabilizing protein as well.
- Almond Milk Instead Of Skim Milk
Another good swap to make is almond milk rather than skim milk. Many think that skim milk is a great option for calcium, and it is, but they don’t realize that milk can contain nearly 10 grams of sugar per serving. This is far too much if you are dealing with diabetes.
Get unsweetened almond milk and you won’t take in any of that sugar at all.
- Butter Instead Of Margarine
If you’ve been eating margarine on an occasional basis when you want a treat, it might be time to switch back to butter instead. Many people avoid butter because of the saturated fat it contains, but realize that margarine often has trans-fats, which are even worse.
You do need some saturated fat on an everyday basis to stay healthy – you just have to watch how much you take in. So, if you want to have some butter, it's okay, just make sure that you aren’t getting a lot of saturated fat elsewhere in your diet plan.
- Eggs Instead Of Bran Flakes
Finally, the last smart swap to consider is replacing oatmeal for your bran flakes. Here again, bran flakes are a great source of fiber – there’s no denying that, but unfortunately, they are also quite high in sugar.
A better breakfast to start your day with is eggs. Those who consume eggs for their first meal of the day tend to consume fewer calories later on in the day, so this can be a great way to help manage your body weight while also reducing hunger.
So keep these healthier foods in mind and make the adjustments in your meal plan.
Little changes will add up, so make sure you aren’t overlooking this.
Try this delicious breakfast recipe to add more eggs to your day.
1 whole egg
½ cup egg whites
½ cup spinach
¼ sliced red pepper
1 tbsp. grass fed butter
¼ cup home-made salsa
Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Whisk together the whole egg and egg whites.
Pour into a pan and top with spinach and red pepper. Add salt and pepper as desired.
Once edges are starting to look cooked, flip half the eggs over the other to form an omelet.
Cook for another minute or two and then serve immediately.
