Twice in two days I suggested it. For lung congestion & immune support. And a severe infection. People ask me often, what would I choose & use for myself? Be it to assist with the heavy phlegm common in stage 4 lung cancer, or to help alleviate a nasty infection affecting the urinary tract. My answer is soooo often the same: liquorice root and ginger tea. With a squeeze of fresh lime. Simple. Proven. Well-researched. Inexpensive. Delicious. Easy to prepare.
Tastes goooood. The liquorice root is sweet and nicely offset by adding some spicy anti-inflammatory immune-boosting slices of fresh ginger. Brought to the boil and simmered for about 5 minutes. And then left to steep until it is warm rather than hot. Add some fresh lime and WOW.
I use about 5 or 6 pieces of liquorice root and 3 or 4 large thin slices of fresh ginger root.
Where does one buy liquorice root, I hear you ask? Almost every Indian grocer stocks it. Here in Chiang Mai, Thailand, I buy it from Raan Bombay in Kad Luang, but I have also seen it at Makro in the spices section.
Apart from coughs, colds, respiratory congestion and infections, when else might you consider drinking a soothing cup of liquorice root tea?
-If you struggle with psoriasis or eczema
-If you have low blood pressure
-If you suffer form muscle spasm and cramps, including menstrual cramps
-If you are living with anxiety or depression and looking for a natural treatment
-If you are worried about hair loss
Needless to say, I suggest this ages-old brew very, very often.
Are their cautions and side effects?
Oh yes.
-DO NOT CONSUME F YOU ARE PREGNANT. It is also used to promote the natural release of an unwanted pregnancy
-Be aware if you use hormonal contraceptives that this tea will elevate blood pressure
-It's an estrogen-rich tea. Great for women struggling with menopausal symptoms but NOT OK for women who have estrogen dependent cancers or men who have libido or erectile issues.

Liquorice root tea is a staple in my house and kitchen, and I have brewed it already twice in the last days for our unwell house-guest. His verdict? Was up and about tonight, eating, feeling stronger and much improvement in the coughing and congestion.
Mother Nature's pharmacopoeia is impressive. Enjoy. Learn. Share.
