Today where kids think video games are more entertaining than going outside, keeping kids active in other ways is important. This handy chart that I found at 730 Sage Street has so many uses to get kids active. I even posted an adult name workout version I found earlier this week, although I think this kid friendly one would be way more fun!

The first thing you need to make sure is that they know how to correctly spell the word they are trying to spell. An easy way to ensure this is to have them write the word on a paper or dry erase board. Then they match up the letters in the word to the action on the chart:

For example, the word CAR would have them: (C) hop on one foot 5 times, (A) jump up and down 10 times and (R) walk like a bear for a count of 5.
There are a lot of great ways to use this chart. If you have young children, teach them to spell their first name, last name, street name while they do these activities. They could even spell their school name and it would almost be like a cheer with the whole class doing the same activities at the same time! With older children who have spelling lists, you could have them learn to correctly spell their spelling words.
I think my students in Spanish 1 would have loved doing this (as 8th graders!) to learn their new vocabulary words in Spanish (outside or in the gym, of course, since some of these require more space)! Homeschool PE is no longer a problem because you can have them spell their names, their best friends' names, family member names, names of places you have lived, the title of their favorite book, the colors of the rainbow...the name of things you can spell with this chart are endless! And the kids are all being active and having fun!
Try this even - act out the different letters in a word and have them guess which word it is. Everyone gets a chance to go and pick their own word. Kind of like charades!
I am going to start this up with my kids and I am sure they are going to think it is pretty fun. They love any activity that involves their names!
