Well one of the main aspects of going on a "Bunny Hash" is that you have to be a woman, so since a majority of Hashers the world over are men this eliminates a lot of the available attendees. So many in fact that sometimes exceptions are made to allow men to go, but they are a little embarrassing.
I'm not really clear on the origin of the term "bunny" but I expect it has something to do with us being a bunch of silly fools on a global scale and the fact that the word "hare" is in our title. Regardless, for the most part it simply is a response to the rather patriarchal nature of the Hash House Harriers and their history, which for a long period of time completely excluded women from attending at all. Of course that would be considered illegal in many parts of the world now but we didn't need to be told that women have to be allowed to come in order to allow them to - girls are just as fun as boys are at these things, sometimes moreso.
We do still have the men only runs on Monday here in Chiang Mai and it would only be appropriate to allow the women to have their own hashes as well. But then again, there are no rules in the Hash, just suggestions and traditions.
This week's Bunny Hash was like any other in that it was 4-6 km in length and winded through the mountainous areas of Chiang Mai in what was actually a great trail. One of the benefits of the events that our female members coordinate is that they tend to have food at theirs, while the ones that the men create might have a bag of chips at the end. They both have a lot of beer.
During the social aspects of the Bunny Hashes the rules for males change a bit.
Men must wear skirts during the circle and they have no authority to run the circle either. This simply means that this is a great time for the women to take control and are able to berate us without fear of reprisal - not that there would be any because we are all friends and none of this is serious. It is all meant in good fun and that is exactly what it ends up being.
As a male participant in the bunny has you can expect to be picked on very frequently and this is part of the reason why they are so much fun.
I have to say, that the women did a very good job with their location this time as the bus ride was a bit longer than usual but the reward was evident when the scenery was just amazing.
I gotta say ladies, I take my hat off to the scouting and execution of this particular Has because it was one of my favorites so far in 2020. This might be at least somewhat influenced by the fact that for over 3 months we were not allowed to do any hashes at all.
So while I cannot comment about the policies for the rest of the world, the Bunny Hashes here in Chiang Mai tend to be fantastic and I strongly encourage everyone to go to at least one. If you have a responsible Hash chapter, the skirts will likely be provided.
