Stepping Away From My Usual Routine
For most of my career, Thanksgiving week has been one of my favorite times to work. It’s quiet, the meetings slow down, and I typically use the time to catch up and prepare for year-end projects.
But as the kids grow older and time together becomes even more valuable, I realized that using this rare, built-in break for something meaningful made more sense than staring at spreadsheets. With our extended family not living nearby, we decided that this year would be different.
And different it was.
Trading the Turkey for the Tropics
I won’t pretend I didn’t miss the traditional Thanksgiving turkey or the ritual of watching football with the family. There’s something comforting about those familiar rhythms.
But in exchange, we got:
- New islands to explore
- Ocean sunsets
- Great food and entertainment
- Relaxation mixed with adventure
- Time together without the daily distractions of life
That trade-off was more than worth it.
Rediscovering the Cruise Experience
It’s been a while since I’ve been in the “cruise game,” but this trip reminded me why people love it. Once you understand how to navigate the ship, the excursions, the dining system, and the flow of the itinerary, cruises become incredibly easy and enjoyable.
This one gave us the perfect blend of escape and convenience. No cooking, no cleaning, no logistics—just a floating resort designed to help you unwind. And somehow, I managed to recharge and stay ready for the year-end sprint at work, which is no small feat.

We had some amazing experiences throughout the week—small moments and big adventures that deserve their own space. I’ll be writing about those in the coming days and weeks, partly to share them and partly to preserve them.
A Possible New Tradition?
This trip made me rethink what Thanksgiving can look like. It doesn’t always have to be tied to one set of traditions. Sometimes, creating new memories together is the best tradition of all.
Who knows?
This Caribbean Thanksgiving might just become a new family ritual in the years to come.
