Today I'm tasting something completely normal in Finland! It's not actually normal in Finland
I had heard that a small chocolate company in Finland is making some special chocolates and their extra super specialty is a chocolate with dried fish in it. They also have chocolate with reindeer meat and some more typical chocolates (like with bilberries), but the fish one is the one which makes to the headlines.
The chocolate brand is called "Taiga" and should be somewhat well available in special stores in Finland.
Wow, that's a real big image to be so blurry. Well I should have focused more, but this should be fine.
Here you can see the fish. The package is 100 g and there is 5 dried fish in it. The fish is something called "European smelt" and in total, 7% of the weight is dried fish. As another special ingredient, the chocolate contains some soy sauce.
The fish is a bit crumbly and when I broke pieces to my family for tasting, my wife asked "Not a piece with the head" and my son said "I want some too, yum!"
In short, the jury conclusion was that the chocolate was really delicious as most of us had assumed the taste being bad. The chocolate was a nice combination of sweet and salty. The fish didn't taste through, lucky enough, but it was giving a nice addition to the chocolate taste.
I was surprised how good combination the fish and chocolate were. I'll buy some more for sure, especially if I know I'll have some tourists coming to Finland looking for special experiences.
If you ever get a chance of tasting chocolate fish or fish chocolate, I recommend you should do it.
