Hey friends - happy weekend!
This is one of our first pictures Chris and I have together - sweaty, happy, and eyes closed in the picture (what's new) on a Saturday after a workout at the track...
I know that sometimes finding the motivation to work out (especially on the weekend) can be hard, but I can say with confidence that I always feel better after I’ve gotten a good sweat going, and I’m always glad I went for it!
So today I’m proposing an idea that has helped me many times in the past, and I hope might help you when motivation is waning (or you just want to have fun!):
I give you...... THE PARTNER WORKOUT!
Exercising with a friend or loved one is SO much more fun than getting after it alone, and it really helps to have someone by your side to keep you accountable and help you enjoy the process so even if you’re not excited about it that day, working out doesn’t feel so much like a chore :)
My advice is to agree on a workout style, plug in some numbers, and then take turns choosing movements so each person gets to do something they like, or that’s a priority for them.
You can utilize work/rest intervals by working one at a time to complete rounds, have one partner chip away at a big number of movements while the other stays in a static hold (squat hold, plank hold, etc.) and periodically switch, or any other variation that floats your boat!
I particularly like to have one partner run around the block while the other completes a round of exercises, and if the person staying to do the exercises finishes before the runner returns, they get to rest the remainder of time until they get back - I always feel motivated to keep a good pace if I think there might be a little rest in it for me!
It’s also fun to do these kinds of workouts “chipper style” where each partner completes as much as they can before the runner returns… As a pair, you can only move on once all reps of an exercise are completed, and communication is key!
Here’s an idea of how something like that could look:
One partner runs 400m while the other partner chips away at:
300 squats
200 sit ups
150 push ups
100 burpees
Switch when the runner returns, and make sure to tell your partner how much you’ve done so they can pick up where you left off!
This is just an idea - feel free to grab a partner (or two!), put your heads together, and make it your own!
I like that this workout can be easily adapted to include equipment if you have it, emphasize strength or cardio per your preferences, and be as long or short as you have time for…
Obviously you can add a time cap if you’re on a strict schedule - sometimes that can help you to work even harder because you’re trying to finish in under a certain time!
I hope this helps you (and a friend or loved one) to get a great workout in together this weekend, and bond over a great sweat! Maybe plan something like a coffee date afterward, or cook a healthy breakfast or lunch together to refuel… Turning a workout into part of a fun day together never hurts!
Sometimes Chris and I like to work out on the beach because once we're done, we're still at the beach!
Who’s your favorite workout partner? Have you ever tried this type of exercise scheme? Let me know!
