When asked to name a Ukrainian dish, most people would probably say "Chicken Kiev" or "Borsch" (those who say that borsch is a Russian dish are utterly ignorant people). Well, they would be right but it is the most trivial answer of all. Ukrainian cuisine is far more diverse and sophisticated than one may think. I will gladly acquaint you with the cuisine of this beautiful Eastern European country, and maybe you'll decide to visit it and try this scrumptious food for yourselves.
I would like to begin this series of posts with the examples of Galytska (Galician) cuisine. Galych is the region in Western Ukraine, the main city of which is glorious Lviv (the city of Lion).
The following review is made on the basis of the menu of the restaurant called "Kumpel" (which can be translated as "friend" or "colleague").
Address: Vynnychenka str. 6, Lviv, Ukraine.
The first dish is Jushka z Sushenymy Grybamy (Thick soup with dried porcini mushrooms and sour cream).
It has an incredibly smooth and creamy texture.
Our dinner continued with another kind of soup, more sophisticated and spicy.
It is called Zuppa z Chasnykom (Garlic soup). While the name might sound not really original, the appearance of this dish is very peculiar.
Really creamy, really garlicky.
A good European dinner can't go without meat. Turkey and paprika sausages with stewed cabbage and potato dumplings.
Here is the check which shows the price of the dinner for two people. 462 Ukrainian hryvnas is around $20.
