Two Weeks Later...
It's been almost two weeks and my broccoli and lettuce is growing fast.
I added some mint and Italian parsley to grow beside it. They're not part of they system, I just thought it was a good spot.
Those microbes are working hard feeding the plants! I'm thinking about getting a bigger tank and adding some edible fish. On the other hand I just found out I could possibly sell goldfish to local pet shops on a pretty regular basis. And they aren't that hard to breed.
Some other fish I have been looking at are talapia, catfish, trout, and bluegill. Crawfish (craw dads, or little tiny lobsters) can be good for keeping the bed clean. I already have a sucker fish so I don't know how they would react together as they are both bottom feeders... and one has claws!
Here is a compassion of the lettuce from the garden and the lettuce in the aquaponics system...
Garden
Aquaponics
Full disclosure' I haven't been feeding (I use organic fish fertilizer) the garden lettuce as much as I should. But I've been watering it regularly because it's been really hot here lately. That being said there would still be a clear difference nonetheless. Aquaponics is a far more effective and efficient delivery method of nutrients.
In the next few weeks I will most likely expand the tank and the grow bed. I want to add more vegetables and see how they do. I've mostly grown herbs in the past but I can expand the system more now that I have moved it outside.
