When i traveled with my family through Germany recently i discovered a fantastic brewery called Sparten brewery in Munich.
They had the nicest food and off course a very tasty sweet which i had to have the recipe to take back home to Australia.
It has now become one of the most popular desserts i do and is very simple.
For this you will off course need some apples. Any variety will do. The bigger the better! Firstly peel and core the apple, then slice into 4 slices to create a donut shape.
You will now need to make the batter consisting of 1 cup of self raising flour, 2 egg yolks, 1 tablespoon of sugar ( no more as your batter will go to dark once frying ) 1 pinch of bi carb powder, a pinch of salt and then full cream milk. Now for the special ingredient! A splash of beer. Yep. Beer. This batter is has a slight beer batter style like you would use for your battered fish. But its sweet.
Mix in the dry and wet ingredients until you have a good consistency like a pancake batter. Add more milk to make it wetter if need be.
Now on a stove fill a pot half way with veg oil and bring to heat. You can place a small nob of the batter in to see if the oil is hot enough.
Once hot enough flour your apples and then dip into the batter and into the oil. While frying flip toss them around so the color evenly on both sides. Do this for 2 mins and then remove from oil onto paper towel. Now get some caster sugar and a pinch of cinnamon and mix around. Dunk your donuts into the sugar mix to coat on both sides.
Now your ready to serve with your favorite accompaniment such as ice cream or as i have done with a nutella chocolate mousse
Enjoy
