Today is the Festival - 'Ugadi' in South India.... It is also considered as the First day of New Year, (in a traditional way), according to some of the South Indian communities.
So in my family, we are celebrating this festival, and here in Mangalore we make this special dish for the breakfast called 'Khotto' in our regional language Konkani!! (Some people call it Moode in some other language.)
This is actually made of idli batter, filled in a specially designed (hand made) mould, using the leaves of a Jackfruit tree!!
How to make it...
Pluck the leaves of a jackfruit tree and clean the leaves properly.
Select a set of 4 equal sized leaves and join them like this...
Fold again at the corners and join these leaves to make a straight mould like this...
.
Fill these moulds with idli batter and steam boil it for 12 minutes. We can use either cooker, (without using the weight.) or a steam pot for this steam boiling...
After steam boiling it can be served with Dal and Chutney...!!
The Aroma of the jackfruit leaves makes it more tasty!!
So today I made it with some sweet 'Sheera', using Samolina.
So this was our today's breakfast menu.. :) :)
My Dad's beloved student The World Famous 'Master Chef' Vikas Khanna named it as 'Leaf - Idli', when he was studying art and painting from my Dad at our home, in the early 90 's!!.
Wishing you all a great day, Happy Ugadi Festival :) With much love, .
