A new poki place opened up just down the street named PokiSpot, so I (of course) went in to give it a try.
If you enjoy seafood, you would probably like poki as it is basically raw tuna with seasoning over rice. The ahi tuna is a very mild tasting fish and can be easily overpowered depending upon which seasoning is used with it.
Most poki places have a variety of proteins to select from.
You can select any or all of the other ingredients which are usually vegetables.
More veggies like corn, cucumber, green onions, lettuce, onions, tomatoes...
I got all tuna for the protein, onions, green onions, sesame seeds, pickled ginger, spicy soy sauce over sushi rice. It was pretty good, $12. I'll be back!
You can easily make your own poki bowl or chirashi bowl if you have an asian market around. Especially a Japanese specific market as they tend to sell various sashimi packages that are already sliced and ready to eat.
Here is a small bowl that I made a few months ago, some of the ingredients. The cucumbers were just sliced with soy and seasoned rice vingar.
Cook some short grain rice and mix with seasoned rice vinegar to make sushi rice.
The end product: Tuna, salmon, hamachi tuna, ika (squid), cucumbers and a seaweed salad. Easy to make as there is no cooking!
