I always try to give German beergardens a fair shake because I do generally like the idea of having access to a wide-variety of beers and who doesn't like a schnitzel? This place was recommended by a friend and before we even got that I kind of regretted the choice to go because it is located in a relatively distant suburb and it took ages to get there.
Anyway, on to why the place is just average.
The dining area and bar is comfortable enough and has a level of authenticity provided by the wooden tones, and the presence of a large variety of mostly German beers. These are on draft as well as in bottles but be prepared to pay for it since a pint is going to run you 250 - 450 Baht per.
There is plenty of seating although in the 60 minutes or so that we were there we only saw 2 other tables. I suppose it was midweek.
The strange thing about this place is that it is in a residential area, you drive past dozens of residences to the end of a street and someone has simply converted their house into a German beergarden. I guess there are no zoning laws here. If it weren't for GPS there is not much chance we could have found it.
I think the only reason why anyone visiting Chiang Mai would even be in this part of town would be to visit the nearby Tube Trek Waterpark which is actually a really cool spot - but we'll save that for another time
The above dish is called "roast pork with potato dumplings Dark beer sauce" according to the menu. However, if we were going to call it what it is it would be Roast Pork with gravy and mashed potatoes from an ice cream scoop and sauerkraut.
Unfortunately, it looked a lot better than it tasted and I finished mine only because i was really hungry. My pal only finished about half of his. This was an advertised special and it was just really disappointing and we were warned after we already started eating that we "may find some rope in our pork because it is very difficult to remove after cooking." LOL, what a strange thing to say to some customers and DUDE, i don't care how difficult it is to remove the rope from your food, it really shouldn't be an unexpected part of any meal!
The dessert was a real treat, we both agreed. This is a creme custard with a very strong raspberry sauce on top. It was only 75 Baht (just over $2) and honestly, i could have eaten 4 of them. It was the highlight of the meal for sure.
I suppose it is a little unfair for me to completely bash this place based on just a few menu items but when it is your advertised special and it is relatively "meh" and there is a danger of there being rope in it, it is difficult for me to rate the establishment very highly.
There are a number of German restaurants in Chiang Mai and based on the very average quality of the food at Happy Munich, combined with the extremely out of the way location, I would say that this one should just be left off the radar for anyone visiting the area. I live relatively close to it and I don't plan on ever going back.

While i did not submit this inside the tasteem interface, i suggest that you do so because it is a good group - i refrain from entering because their scoring system is broken and I win every contest I enter, which i don't think i necessarily deserve. I'm just trying to be a nice guy here!
