Nature’s garbage disposal.
It’s been a very busy weekend for our family. Friends and family were in the area for the holidays. We had visitors come to our house and we went out to see family.
I’ve mentioned before that we don’t celebrate Christmas. Unfortunately, since I waited too long to let family know, we still went for the meals. (We won’t be doing that next year.) Saturday night, my husband’s side of the family all gathered at his aunt’s house. Normally, there is both turkey and ham for supper. This year there was just ham... My kids and I ended up snacking on other things. My husband on the other hand, did eat the ham.
The next day, we had dinner at his parents’ house. Again, ham. My kids and I again just snacked on some trail mix. (We weren’t trying to be rude. I know we could have had potatoes and other things. My kids just don’t like eating when there’s a lot going on, and I was busy with baby.) My husband on the other hand, ate the ham again.
Luckily, when it came to my parents’ supper, there was turkey. My dad had asked a week in advance what we wanted to eat. Thankfully, I said I don’t eat ham, because that’s what they were planning on making. However, they had my husband make homemade dressing/stuffing, which includes ground pork. Cue a big ol’ sigh!
For anyone who has read my posts before, you may have been under the impression that our whole family is Torah observant. I wish this was the case. I am, obviously, and I’m raising our children to be. My husband is a different story. He believes God’s law still applies, but he doesn’t follow it. He is ok with me and the children following Torah, but when shabbat comes along and he has things that “have to get done”, he will get it done, for example.
Anyways, so we don’t buy pork for ourselves, but if it’s offered, he will eat it.
Sure enough, about 5:30 this morning, he was sick and has been sick on and off most of the day. Finally, when he came out of the bedroom, he asked if any of my family was sick. Nope. He hadn’t heard anyone on his side being sick either. I know I probably shouldn’t have, but I couldn’t help but say, “I’m sure it was the ham.” He asked me, “Do you think since I know we’re not supposed to eat it, but I did anyways, that that was God’s punishment?” He said it, not me!
As much as I don’t enjoy seeing anyone in our family sick, I do hope now he thinks twice about eating unclean foods. There’s a reason God says not to eat unclean animals, including pigs. Do a little searching around on google and you will find how unhealthy they are for us, in multiple ways. Yes, you could argue that other meats can make us sick, too. But not if you raise them right, and prepare them correctly. God made those animals clean for us to eat. God made unclean animals to be nature’s garbage disposals. I don’t think you can change that no matter how much you try to control it.
