String Hoppers with Minced Meat Sauce
I remembered in my secondary school days when our Mum usually prepares this dish (Bread flour string hoppers) for the family. I tell you what, any day the menu for the day is string hoppers, there is usually rejoicing among us, just like the bible will say that there is always rejoicing in heaven for every single soul that repented. This menu is made out of bread flour but by the time my Mum prepares this dish, you will not want to eat rice again, you will always be asking for more flour string hoppers. String hoppers are made out of the following: Rice, Flour, Wheat, etc but I prefer flour string hoppers because of the aroma that comes out of a well prepared flour string hopper. The taste is equally fantastic.
Equipment and Some of the Recipes
Bread Flour or Rice Flour
Salt
Boiled Water
How to prepare
Warm the flour in an oven or a sauce pan
Add salt to taste
Add the boiled water,, which should be luke warm to the flour slowly until a soft dough is achieved
Place the dough in a string hoppers press, the press both handles to squeeze into hopper mats, Like this:
Line up the mats in a large pot or steamer making sure that the water on the pot does not reach up to the string hoppers mats for effective result.
Cook for 10 minutes until the strings are properly cooked.
Serve with minced meat sauce
This is the result of the above recipe, very appetizing. Note that the end result of the strings should be hoppy. Food is ready.
You can also turn it into meat pie, sausage rolls:
This is a very good substitute for rice meal among the Sri Lankans. I like string hoppers because it is economical and tasteful.
