Many of us throw away apple skin, but it actually contains an antioxidant that’s very good for your lungs and brain and it can protect you from cancer. Besides that, apple skin contains a lot more fiber and vitamins than the apple itself.
Chard, also known as Swiss beet, is a plant similar to spinach, which is known for it’s high content of minerals and vitamin A. But not only the leaves are edible. The roots of this plant contain an amino acid called glutamine that helps your body regenerate. You can slice the root and use it along with the leaves.
Nobody eats the skin of oranges, because it’s a little bitter. But nutritionists say that the skin can play a big part in lowering your cholesterol level, and it’s even more efficient than medication. But don’t worry, you won’t have to chew the skin. You just have to grate it and use it in your recipes. It tastes really good in some cakes, and you can also use it in meat recipes.
Red beet is currently used just for it’s root, but it used to be cultivated for it’s leaves. And that’s understandable, because the leaves contain a lot of fiber, calcium, iron, and vitamins A and K.
Lastly, one of the most preferred foods of all times, potatoes. We all love them, they’re easy to cook, they taste really good and we can use them in almost every recipe. But we always throw away the skin.
The thing is, the skin is full of fiber, vitamin B and C, calcium and many others. There are not a lot of recipes in which you can use it, but you can eat the skin when you cook the potatoes in the oven.
