Anyone else live their teen years in the 80s? Big hair, awesome music, good TV, some really funky styles of clothing....I'm thinking huge hair bows and lace fingerless gloves....Walkmans, cassette tapes, disco balls....Good times!
I was asked to make a 40th birthday cake last year with an 80's theme. The client sent me a picture she found online to use as inspiration....so here's what I came up with. (All decorative panels on the sides of the cake are made with modelling chocolate and completely edible.)
I did a lot of research for iconic television shows, movies and music for the year the birthday girl was born, just to make the decorations on the cake more personal. Her favorite movie was "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and Madonna was her favorite singer.
Michael Jackson was such a huge star that I added his iconic sparkly glove and that year's hit record "Bad" also.
I added a few popular TV shows and movies as well as PacMan to decorate the sides of each tier....
I had so much fun looking at all the memories of my past with my online research.
The topper was a disco ball I made of a styrofoam ball covered in squares of silver glittery duct tape. I couldn't find a toy disco ball the right size that wouldn't be too heavy for the cake, so I improvised with this. The inspiration photo also had Rubiks cube on top, but that feature was requested to be excluded; I just added a 2D image of one on the side of one tier.
I finished the cake board with some brightly colored geometric shapes which seemed to go with the trim around the bottom of each tier, also made of modelling chocolate.
Hope you enjoyed looking at my pictures!
