From Chef Derek:
"When I first arrived in Britain from America I was hugely surprised at how little choice there was for vegans and those considering a lifestyle change. For too long, vegans have been overlooked, with many offerings that are available seemingly created to appease rather than truly please. Wicked Kitchen plans to change all that and I’m proud to work with Tesco and offer all its customers delicious meals to get them on board with this growing foodie revolution."
I personally love the fact that they have been so inventive with mushrooms.
In a press release from tesco they state:
"Tesco has partnered with pioneering chef, Derek Sarno, to create ‘Wicked Kitchen’ – a new range of irresistible meals that celebrate everything that’s ‘wicked’ and tasty about plants.
Recently demand for vegetarian and vegan food has soared as a result of lifestyle choices such as Meat Free Mondays and flexitarian diets. In the last year alone, Tesco has directly seen the effect of those lifestyle choices with demand for chilled vegetarian ready meals and meat substitutes soaring by 25 per cent.
Prepared exclusively for Tesco, the new range will launch on 8 January in 600 stores nationwide.
From crispy carrot ‘pastrami’ to wicked-meaty barbecued ‘shrooms and Sourdough Pizza, the vibrant wraps, meals and salads have all the zing, punch and crunch to encourage Brits to eat more veg – and they’re available at a great price too."
I really have to say hats off to Tesco, they have really been pushing their plant based meals and alternatives with plant based recipes listed on their own website and facebook channels too! Now obviously they are a business and the growth of Veganism in the last few years is a clear gap in the market that they will now exploit, but hey, I'm not going to complain, after all everyone of these meals / products that are bought are one less meal that contains an inocent animal!
Oh and did you know that tescos own brand cosmetics and personal care items are not tested on animals?
Here is their statement on animal testing...
‘We do not support testing on animals for cosmetic or household products, and do not carry out or commission such tests on our own-brand products or the ingredients they contain. Some products have ingredients which will have been tested on animals in the past. This is because we operate a fixed cut-off date for animal testing of ingredients, of 31 December 2007. We have set in place very robust systems to ensure that these cut-off dates have been met by all our suppliers to our own brand, where stipulated.’
