An underground currency is developing in Hawaii. Last month on Oahu a man absconded with 8 cases of the canned meat product from a local Safeway store. At the same time at a Long's drugs 3 women were seen loading carts with 18 cases of Spam. At a downtown mall a man stole a case of Spam and made his getaway after punching a security guard.
As a result of the rash of thefts, merchants are putting the Spam under lock and key. Now in order to purchase a can of Spam, one has to ask a sales person for assistance.
The president of the Retail Merchants opined that the thieves did not steal the Spam because of hunger but Mr. Yamaki believes that they are using the Spam as a currency.
Hawaii is the largest consumer of Spam in all the states. It is estimated that 5 million pounds are sold annually. Due to the popularity of Spam it is logical that people would use it for trading.
