Because I refuse to get myself a frying pan, I need to make due without one!
Dutchies know all about oliebollen I'm sure, but I know it's not a global thing. These little balls of fluffy dough are eaten here in the Netherlands at new years. We either buy them, or make them ourselves from scratch or with a little pre-mix package. Most of the recipes require your dough to sit in a warm place for a while, but today, I found a recipe that's way quicker!
I wasn't really planning on making oliebollen, but hey, the recipe looked easy enough. I didn't have all of the ingredients though (when do I ever?), so I switched one of the main ingredients. It required buttermilk, but I used coconut milk and a bit of vinegar instead. I also skipped on the frying pan and instead, used a regular baking pan. I was afraid they wouldn't cook all the way through, because I wasn't drowning them in oil, but only used a thick layer. However, they turned out really well!
Even the taste was good! Tastes just like the real deal. So I'm sharing them with all of you right away! I used way less of the ingredients than the recipe called for, but you can scale up if you like. This recipe is for the amount you see on the pictures.
Ingredients
- 200g Self-rising flour
- 200ml Coconut milk
- 1 Tsp vinegar
- 1/2 Tsp salt
Directions
- Mix all of the ingredients until well combined. Your dough shouldn't be too wet, but if you can't manage to mix in all of the flour, add a little bit of water until everything is mixed in.
- Heat up oil in a baking pan. Make sure the entire bottom is covered with plenty of oil to spare aswell. I used medium fire.
- Once your oil is heated completely, start adding small lumps of dough (they will grow in the pan). Use a cookie scoop or two spoons.
- Bake on both sides until golden brown (see images). Adjust your fire if things to too fast or slow.
- Line a plate with kitchen paper and place your oliebollen on there to dry and cool off a bit.
Enjoy!
We usually eat them covered with powdered sugar, though these taste just fine without sugar aswell!
P.S.: Make sure to have plenty of fresh air coming in, because you'll get a pretty smokey atmosphere inside your house otherwise... Be smarter than I was! Though it did make for some nice sunshine inside of the house:
