Today's rare fruit is the rose apple (Syzygium malaccense) which is native to Malesia and Australia. The tree can grow to 1 40–60 ft in height flowering in early summer then bearing fruit three months later. Grown in Costa Rica, it flowers in February, with ripe fruit coming in April. Coffee growers utilize rose apple to divert birds.
Rose apples are nutrient rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, thiamin, dietary fiber, niacin, sulfur, iron, and potassium. They contain organic compounds, such as jambosine, betulinic acid, and friedelolactone. Rose apples can benefit health concerns like strained or sore eyes, epileptic seizures, inflammation in the joints, smallpox, and may help in increasing the cognitive ability.
