BBQ’d meat is very popular in China, especially in the northern provinces that experience winter, the south is keen but not so much since cooking it creates quite a bit of heat.
It wasn’t such a killer hot day, the sun was hidden by some overcast weather making it doable to walk around in the afternoon. Often in Dalian it is not deathly hot; I can only imagine how much hotter and hazy it is in the south of China where most of my Chinese expat friends are located, troopers. I hate cockroaches.
I wandered down to the food vendors I usually dodge this time of year; due to food safety concerns. I have watched countless shops open then close suddenly after a few months, even when they had line ups out the door just a week ago; people got sick and gossiped, the end.
I like and trust this shop because they keep the meat in freezers until someone orders it. This may take away from its freshness but knowing it’s not been sitting in the sun rotting, waiting for a guy like me to give in to a craving and make a onetime sale for a few bucks. This guy is aiming for the stars, truly appreciated, I hope he makes it for his wife and kid.
This is my view as I walk away. Got my Mutton and Chicken Wings, seasoned and wrapped in tinfoil to keep its flavor until I get home. Which was kept at temperature and was just as good as if it had munched down at the shop moments off the grill.
Love this city, drives me crazy some days, it just offers everything I need in a big city minus the language I grew up with or the variety other cities here have but I do love it’s a city I can get around in without the help of random strangers.
