On a mission to find great food and beer in exotic Cozumel!
I miss . If beer and career made me into the Beerologist, then
back on the STEEM blockchain made me a professional restaurant critic. I use the term 'professional' loosely but being paid for your review would make it so.....no? Though tasteem.io has had a tough go with the blockchain transition from STEEM to HIVE , I am not going to let that, or a little pandemic, stop me from chasing my dream.
Come tag along with a couple of hosers on a quest to avoid Corona in Mexico.
Cevesaria Kusam - Cozumel
A nice beer garden with Tacos as prominent as Brewery is enough to bring us into a place that probably only had better than Corona.
When you meet the friendly staff under the craft beer rainbow, you definitely get your hopes up. Definitely for the tacos, and a long shot wish for IPA.
Can I start you with a Drink?
Don't mind if I DO!
Taking a look at the chalk menu of any craft brewery is exciting because it gets erased so often and filled in again with th3e freshest batches on tap and available. An Oktoberfest lager might be good enough for the locals and non-hopheads but I am looking for IPA. I don't have to look very far as the second beer is...gasp...a locally brewed, hazy hoppy IPA called Haze Man. SOLD!
4 different on-premises brews available on tap is about as good as it gets. Here is our first one being drawn with care.
While we were considering the menu, a nice order of freshly baked tortillas and guacamole showed up with our hazy session ales. No about that menu...
The Menu
I am pretty sure I could order this variety of appetizers and have these tacos at every meal. Varied tasty snacks to go with the beer and a broad selection of tacos you hope are as good as they are described to be. Simple and to the point.
The back of the menu tells a little story about the beer brewed here and also offers other selections for people who came for the tacos rather than the craft beer.
After the session IPA was half gone, the tacos showed up. 3 to an order and there were rather good! I opted for the Steak tacos which were graciously garnished with pineapple which I thought was a nice touch. Zesty and tasty with a nice light touch from the fruits and veggies.
Fatboy ordered the Pollo (chicken) tacos which turned out to be equally as delicious.
Time for Another
With the tacos half gone, and our first beer tasting like another, we ordered just that. Pro Tip: When you claim to be a world famous beer blogger on the Hive Blockchain, they let you pour your own! Not much gas in the lines compared to what I am used to but you can see I am concentrating with devlish focus.
This time, we opted for the ominously named Day of the Muertos triple IPA. I was not sure what I would get with this one as triple IPAs can get heavy, harsh and sport-hopped. This one turned out to be one of the fullest, well-balanced beers I have ever enjoyed. Speaking with Brewmaster Sergio https://sites.google.com/view/cerveceria-kusam/meet-the-brew-master?authuser=0 , he described the unique brewing process and benefits of having an onsite bakery to augment the fermenting stage of the process.
Day of the Muertos definitely gets my seal of approval for how serious yet reasonable it was. I would try this again!
Dessert
For dessert, we opted for our first (of many) tequila nightcap of the vacation. A little Don Julio Reposado to sip as we let everything settle and know we have found our place in Cozumel.
All in all...
When you consider the bleak forecast of watery Mexican lagers, to find a place that not only brews their own, has an IPA, and also has a triple IPA that is solid, this is a home run. I would have come for the tacos alone but would actually return to this far-away island for the beer. The brewer/proprietor is present and passionate. The staff is friendly and fun, especially 'Marco Pollo' who is deftly attentive when you call "Marco!" Even when you are rolling by on scooters at 30km/hour. "Marco!" "Pollo! Come in for just one beer!"
