Last night the sound of tuttuttut.... made me jumped onto my feet and out of the door. It is the familiar sound of putu seller who rode his bike around the neighbourhood to sell this traditional snack. This snack which is said to be scarce is still easy to be found in my city, Surabaya.
It is made of rice flour that are placed into bamboo sticks with red sugar in the middle of it. Then it is steamed and finally sprinkled with coconut shaving on top of it. A light and sweet snack that I like. However since it passed by my place around five, I could only buy it on Sundays when I am at home.
The tuttuttut sound itsrlf cones from the bamboo that let out smoke as it keep steaming. This snack is best eaten while it is hot and in cold weather in the evening. It also cones in various colours, using food colouring but the one selling yesterday foesn't have colouring on it hence it is all white.
A little trivia, this snack can also be found in malaysia, singapore. China also have their version of it, but instead of red sugar filling, they have green bean fillings and are often a snack gor the emperor.
