Callie "You have to be cruel to be kind" Chrysanthemum Charles wasn't callous, per se. She cared about the feelings of others. She felt them deeply. She was truly empathetic. There was a big but, however. She believed, deep in her heart of hearts, that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger, and that simple joys are addictive and tempt weakness. So she made others strong by insisting that they not feel their feelings. There was a thought lingering. Something about choosing how to feel. Something about... when a child is crying, or needs a diaper change, you can decide to be eager to spend time with the child or you can decide to do it with 'tude. Take pleasure in that which isn't overtly enticing, because there you will be able to experience the much hardier complex joy that comes from work.
She wasn't a Calvinist, per se, but she was a hard worker, and she did believe that the only things worth doing were the things that were difficult to do. It's easy to spend your time... to fritter away your time... writing the same few lines of code in different orders.
