Joey, The Simple Man With a Dream
An Analysis, by Nathan Taber
I want to talk about a man named Joey. He is known as the innovator of videos such as the “Nutella Challenge” (Pictured Above) as well as the owner and operator of The Joey’s World Tour Channel on YouTube where he uploads such videos. There’s nobody quite like Joey. As he lets out a growl, and chokes half to death on mouthfuls of Nutella it makes you wonder, is this guy not all there? Now It’s time to take a deeper look at the man behind the madness; Joey. When it comes right down to it, Joey is one of the strangest people I have never met and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to talk a little bit about the the man, the myth, the legend...Joey.
It all started in February of 2011, when Joey started uploading YouTube videos. Being a personal chef, Joey focused mainly on cooking “How To” videos and other random life happening vlogs. I’m not sure Joey really had an idea of where this new YouTube endeavor was heading, but then he uploaded a video that shook the internet to its core. The “Nutella Hands Free Challenge” as it’s called has garnered well over a million views to this day. It’s an absolutely revolting look at a a man slurping down ounces of Nutella, all while growling and snarling about like a crazy person...hands free! Joey, what have you done to yourself!? But it would be these types of videos that would make Joey “YouTube Famous”.
As his YouTube career evolved Joey started incorporating food review into his videos..fast food reviews. Bringing you that signature Joeys World Tour “flavor” 3 times a week and earning anywhere between 25-80 thousand views per video on average. Joey has built an empire out of burgers and French fries by driving his car between fast food joints trying out their latest meals. Joey played his cards right; hooking an audience with over the top food challenges, but now mainly now sticking to the more economical food reviews. Other YouTube creators have made mash ups of Joey’s most cringeworthy content giving him what one may consider free advertising. With Joey having taken part in a multitude of self created food “challenges” there’s plenty of content to be found. The Hands Free Nacho Cheese and Green Wasabi Challenges are some other crowd pleasers.
As you would expect he gets a lot of hate and criticism on YouTube, but despite this he has built up a cult following among a subset of his followers. His comments section is littered with comments, mainly hate and crude humor. But good or bad it doesn’t matter, because all this attention has translated to one thing for Joey - revenue. You can even buy Joey’s World Tour hats and T shirts. It begs the question, if this man can build an empire off of fast food reviews and cringe food challenges what am I capable of? Maybe we could all learn a little something from Joey... What’s your take?
