Recently, we enjoyed a tasty melon from the store.
As we devoured it, Pinkie-Pepper mentioned how much she really liked it and suggested that we save some seeds to plant. Obviously, these have been watching and learning!
@Papa-pepper told her that she could save some of the seeds if she wanted to, and soon she was hard at work getting some of her own to try planting this season.
It is a blessing to realize that these children know that seeds = food. As long as this melon is "stable" kind, the fruit should be true to type. If it is, then Pinkie-Pepper could start reproducing her own seeds now and may be still able to grow these melons for her children one day.
If the melon does not produce true to kind, it'll be an educational learning opportunity about hybridization and other things that can occur when breeding plants. Like many things on the homestead, it can all be a chance to learn, grow, and understand.
While some children these days think that food comes from stores, and we are not saying that it can't be found there, to take the time to teach the next generation the "simple" things in life can be a rewarding opportunity that can bring blessings for years to come.
If we do get these growing this year, we will try to keep you updated on Pinkie-Pepper's progress and results! Enjoy your garden if you have one, and if not, why not try planting something this year?
