The dreams haunt me. Not just because of their content but because of their consistency. I’m in the city, standing in line for coffee rations. Others are there too chit-chatting about inconsequential things, when a loud ripping sound fills the air and reality tears asunder. Beyond the tear, I see mountains, forests, and even animals. It’s a majestic scene, but I’m terrified. What happens if the tear grows? Our reality will be consumed!
I look around me, and I’m astonished that nobody’s paying attention. They continue their conversations unperturbed by the dissolution of the very fabric of reality.
Night after night, the scenic nightmare descends, bringing with it the strange sensation of déjà vu.
This can’t be happening. It’s too much too bear. This reality distortion. I feel myself spiraling out of control.
“Abre tus ojos.”
It’s a woman’s voice, soothing in the crisp morning light.
“That’s a movie, you know,” she says, the whistling of a kettle rising in the air. “With Penelope Cruz. She’s so pretty. The film is a cult classic. It's one of those films that bends your mind and makes you question the nature of reality. You should watch it. It's got subtitles because it's in Spanish. It means ‘open your eyes’. You gotta open yours because breakfast is just about ready.”
