Laika era el nombre de la desafortunada perrita que fue enviada por la Unión Soviética al espacio para morir. Era una misión completamene suicida ya que en ese entonces no se contaba con la tecnología para traer de regreso a la Tierra el satélite en el que iba a ser enviada. Laika, fue un capricho del líder soviético Nikita Jrushchov que le pidió al ingeniero del proyecto que hiciera algo que sorprendiera a todos en el 40 aniversario de la Revolución Comunista. el ingeniero obedeció y su propuesta fue enviar un canino al espacio.

Laika was the name of the unfortunate little dog that was sent by the Soviet Union into space to die. It was a completely suicidal mission since at that time the technology was not available to bring the satellite on which it was to be sent back to Earth. Laika, it was a whim of the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev who asked the project engineer to do something that would surprise everyone on the 40th anniversary of the Communist Revolution. the engineer obeyed and his proposal was to send a canine into space.

La perrita iría en el satélite Sputnik 2, el cual se pondría en órbita y después se quemaría al entrar a la atmósfera terrestre. Además este satélite no estaba hecho para aterrizar y era un cilindro de 4 metros de altura y 2 metros de diámetro. El tamaño para Laika dentro de ese satélite era como de una lavadora. A la perrita le pusieron unos sensores en las costillas para medir su respiración. El 3 de noviembre de 1957, Laika de tan solo dos años partió a miles de kilómetros fuera de la Tierra. Se justificaron diciendo que el objetivo de esa misión era ver la reacción de un organismo vivo en una misión espacial. Por obvias razones la perrita no aguantó y falleció unas horas después del lanzamiento debido al calentamiento de la cabina y problemas respiratorios. Ella estuvo sin vida dentro de la cápsula hasta que el satélite se consumió al entrar a la atmósfera de la Tiera el 14 de abril de 1958, 5 meses. Lamentablemente, ella no fue la única víctima de estos experimentos. Fueron enviados aproximadamente 48 perros al espacio y fueron utilizados otros animales en otras investigaciones espaciales. Estados Unidos no se quedó atrás y envió varios monos al espacio.

The dog would go on the Sputnik 2 satellite, which would go into orbit and then burn up upon entering the Earth's atmosphere. Furthermore, this satellite was not made to land and was a cylinder 4 meters high and 2 meters in diameter. The size for Laika inside that satellite was like a washing machine. Sensors were attached to the dog's ribs to measure her breathing. On November 3, 1957, Laika, just two years old, left thousands of kilometers away from Earth. They justified themselves by saying that the objective of that mission was to see the reaction of a living organism on a space mission. For obvious reasons, the dog couldn't stand it and died a few hours after launch due to overheating in the cabin and respiratory problems. She was lifeless inside the capsule until the satellite was consumed upon entering Earth's atmosphere on April 14, 1958, 5 months. Unfortunately, she was not the only victim of these experiments. Approximately 48 dogs were sent into space and other animals were used in other space research. The United States was not far behind and sent several monkeys into space.

Laika, ha recibido varios homenaje por su sacrificio por la humanidad. Su historia sirvió como inspiración para el personaje de Cosmos en la película Guardianes de la galaxia. Ella tiene poderes de telequinesis y puede hablar por medio de su casco.

El 11 de abril de 2008 fue inaugurado un monumento en honor a la perra Laika en el centro de Moscú.​ Dicho monumento fue colocado en un centro comercial cerca del Instituto de Medicina Militar, donde medio siglo atrás ocurrieron los experimentos científicos con la participación de la célebre perra. La figura de bronce, de dos metros de altura, representa uno de los segmentos de un cohete espacial, que se transforma en una mano humana, sobre la cual está el cuerpo de Laika.

On April 11, 2008, a monument in honor of the dog Laika was inaugurated in the center of Moscow. This monument was placed in a shopping center near the Institute of Military Medicine, where half a century ago scientific experiments took place with the participation of the famous bitch. The two-meter-tall bronze figure represents one of the segments of a space rocket, which transforms into a human hand, on which Laika's body rests.
