I recently tried making lard from pork, eager to copy the crispy cracklings and clear lard I saw in videos. When I told the market butcher what I wanted, he just suggested pure fatty pork, saying it makes tastier lard than pork leaf lard.
I hated cutting the meat, so I ground it into small bits with a grinder, hoping the cracklings would be finer. But I didn’t stir often enough while cooking. The tiny meat pieces got too hot too fast and burned. In the end, I had to scoop out everything—lard and burnt cracklings mixed together—and my attempt was a total fail.
That night, I took an investment class. I finally saw how wrong my market call had been. I thought the post-holiday spring rally was just starting, but it had actually begun ten days earlier. The A-share market had quietly scored 13 straight up days and hit a new all-time high. I checked the Shanghai Composite Index to be sure, and it was true.
Where will the market go next? I suddenly knew I needed to learn some technical analysis. Otherwise, I’ll keep missing opportunities, sitting on the sidelines as prices rise, and selling winning stocks too early. I used to only believe in value investing, but after watching the market go up and down so many times, I’ve realized that the "value-investing-only approach" isn’t right for regular people.
