"I just can't be bothered to do that, it's too much work!"
I suppose it's an innocent enough statement; it's one of those things most of us have thought — and possibly acted on — at one point or another.
Of course, let's also keep in mind that there are many contexts we can wrap around that statement.
Personally, when I "can't be bothered" to do something, I simply don't do it!" Not rocket science.
The reason I find myself diving back into this particular topic is related to how it comes upon us all in a different context:
"I just can't be bothered to do that (properly), it's too much work! (So I'm just going to do a half-assed job instead)"
There are few things that annoy me more than discovering that something I just bought/got involved with that looks amazing actually turns out to have been created in a haphazard manner riddled with inappropriate shortcuts and omissions.
Like the writers' web site I visited a few weeks back that had a promotional page for their newest workshop, where someone clearly couldn't be bothered to have someone proofread their text. 150-ish words of copy inviting people to become better writers, and you have three typos in it???
Of course, that doesn't affect a lot of lives, and not that much.
But let's look at a more "public" context...
Like sellers on eBay, or Amazon, or Craigslist who seemingly have the time and energy to share 2,000 words about their terms and conditions for payment, shipping, returns, international customs... but can't be bothered" to even write the dimensions or other super basic information about what they are selling.
Or let's look at the bank Mrs. Denmarkguy and I use... specifically, let's look at their web portal for online banking.
When you get to their log-in page, it says "Enter Password" in the Username field, and it doesn't even "blank out" when you start typing, so you have to actually erase the words, and then type your username.
Not only could someone not be bothered to do extensive user testing on their interface (which is NOT new) to catch the initial bug in the system, but even though I have reported this bug 4-5 times (both in person at the bank, and by email to customer support) evidently nobody could be bothered to make a simple change to the code.
Now, that little annoyance affects every single person who goes to log into online banking...
So, have I just grown into a "grumpy old man" who sits on my front porch, yelling at kids to "get off my lawn!?!?!?" I don't think so.
Granted, I was raised by a father, one of whose primary lifelessons was "If something is worth doing, it's worth doing WELL. And if it's NOT worth doing, then don't do it at ALL!"
Perhaps no place does this kind of sloppiness annoy me more than when I hire an "expert/professional" to do something and I actually find that I have to tell them how to do part of the job I hired them to do!
At this point, some of you might be asking "so why aren't you doing it, YOURSELF, if you're so particular and persnickety?" Good question! In most cases, because I don't have the specialized tools/equipment and diagnostic devices and am not about to spend several thousand dollars on them in order to execute a $300 fix. But I do expect the person with the "expertise" the the willingness to make that investment to have a clue!
Allright. 'Nuff said! I'm going to send yet another email to the bank about their log-in screen. Maybe I should even let them know that a entire blog post tirade resulted from the fact that I got a "username or password not recognized" error message, because I managed to leave one stray letter... that shouldn't be there at all!
Thanks for reading, and enjoy the rest of your week!
