Motivación instintiva — Motivated by instinct

Siempre me he visto a mí mismo como un nómada. He pasado muy buena parte de mi vida habitando nuevas localidades y explorando sitios diferentes a mi lugar de origen. Gracias a eso tengo la fortuna de decir que he conocido una gran parte de Venezuela. No tanto como quisiera ni mucho menos tanto como amerita un país tan hermoso como este, pero no he perdido ninguna buena oportunidad que se me haya presentado para ampliar mis experiencias en toda nuestra geografía.

I have always seen myself as a nomad. I have spent a good part of my life inhabiting new locations and exploring places far from my hometown. Thanks to that, I am fortunate to say that I have known a large part of Venezuela. Not as much as I would like and not as much as a beautiful country like this one deserves, but I never missed any good opportunity to expand my experiences throughout our geography.

Rompiendo la jaula — Breaking the cage

Conocer mejor mi propio país siempre fue muy gratificante, pero era una experiencia bastante incompleta. Y es que no puedo decir que a Venezuela le falten lugares que tengan un gran valor cultural y turístico, pero este es un país muy pequeño; apenas una fracción del mundo...

Por eso, ante la realidad que afrontamos en medio de una crisis económica sin precedentes, llegué a sentirme rezagado por no haberme dado la oportunidad de salir a explorar fuera de estas fronteras como muchos ya lo han hecho recientemente. Era bastante irónico que teniendo un alma tan cosmopolita no hubiera visitado nunca alguna ciudad en el extranjero.

Getting to know my own country better was always very gratifying, but it was a rather incomplete experience. I can't say that Venezuela lacks places of great cultural and touristic value, but this is a very small country, just a fraction of the world...

So, faced with the reality we live in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis, I came to feel left behind for never given myself the opportunity to explore outside these borders as many have done recently. It was quite ironic that having such a cosmopolitan soul, I had never visited a city abroad.

La decisión correcta — The right decision

Mi gran frustración pudo culminar a finales del año pasado cuando con gran determinación me atreví a salir del país. Con un buen plan en mente me haría parte de ese gran fenómeno migratorio que se ha desencadenado en Venezuela y partí rumbo a una nación considerada hermana por la historia que compartimos. Una aventura había dado inicio, y sería realmente emocionante.

My great frustration came to an end at the last trimester of last year when, with great determination, I dared to leave the country. With a good plan in mind, I was going to became part of the great migratory phenomenon that has been unleashed in Venezuela and set off for a country considered a sister nation because of our shared history. An adventure begun then, and it would be an exciting one.

En la mitad del mundo — In the middle of the world

Tras salir de Venezuela viví en Ecuador por un par de meses, y aunque la experiencia fue bastante satisfactoria, no resultó ser del todo lo que buscaba. Era un empleado asalariado, tenía unos ingresos decentes, pero estaba atado a un horario y una ciudad que no me ofrecían mayores emociones en mis escasos tiempos libres.

Hubo muchas razones de peso para que decidiera probar algo distinto, y de eso hablaré cuando sea conveniente, pero lo que más me motivó es que empezaba a sentirme bastante solitario. Fue entonces cuando inicié un viaje mucho más interesante que trabajar en una fábrica de chifles. La historia que viene a continuación es sobre mi recorrido.

After leaving Venezuela I lived in Ecuador for a couple of months, and although the experience was quite satisfying, it was definitely not what I was looking for. I was a salaried employee, I had a decent income, but I was tied to a schedule and a city that did not offer me much excitement in my scarce free time.

There were many compelling reasons why I decided to try something different, and I'll talk about that when it's convenient, but what motivated me the most was that I was starting to feel really lonely. That's when I set out on a journey that was much more interesting than working in a plantain chips factory. The story that follows is about that travel.

La otra frontera — The other border

Tuve que salir de Ecuador desde un modo bastante apresurado. El calendario hacía un conteo regresivo para la fecha de mi cumpleaños, y me esperaban en Colombia para compartir la fecha conmigo. Pero viajar durante ese periodo me enfrentó a un sinnúmero de dificultades que provocaron que todo el viaje fuera mucho más complicado de lo que debería.

Para mi mala suerte, justo en ese momento, habían fuertes protestas en el país y las rutas regulares no estaban siendo utilizadas. En lugar de cruzar la frontera de Tulcán/Ipiales, me tuve que dirigir a la frontera de Mataje. Y luego de haber pasado un día adicional en Ecuador, finalmente llegué a la hermosa Colombia colmado de buenas expectativas.

I had to leave Ecuador in a rather hurried way. The calendar was counting down to my birthday, and there were somo people in Colombia waiting to share the date with me. But travelling during that period confronted me with a lot of difficulties that made the whole trip much more complicated than it should have been.

To my misfortune, just at that time, there were strong protests in the country and the regular routes were not being used. Instead of crossing the Tulcán/Ipiales border, I had to head for the Mataje border. And after having spent an extra day in Ecuador, I finally arrived in lovely Colombia full of good expectations.

Un equipo de la misma patria — A team from the same homeland

En el camino, notando que el viaje iba a durar más de lo esperado, hice una alianza con unos chicos que venían en la misma ruta con destino a Venezuela. Ellos fueron fundamentales para que el viaje no se volviera aburrido y resultara más sencillo superar cada obstáculo. Se hicieron un gran apoyo durante todo el recorrido hasta el momento en que nos tocó separarnos para siempre. Dondequiera que estén, chicos, los llevo en mi corazón. Les deseo éxitos y bendiciones.

On the way, noticing that the trip was going to take longer than expected, I made an alliance with some guys who were coming on the same route to Venezuela. They were fundamental to make the trip less boring and easier to overcome every obstacle. They were a great support during the whole journey until the moment when it was our turn to part forever. Wherever you are, guys, you are in my heart. I wish you success and blessings.

La ciudad que amé a primera vista — The city I loved at first sight

Cuando me bajé del autobús luego de tres días de viaje, sentí un alivio inmenso. Al fin había llegado a una ciudad que había querido conocer por mucho tiempo. Medellín es una de las localidades más conocidas del país neogranadino, y las opiniones que había oído de la gente que la conocía me habían causado bastante interés por mucho tiempo.

When I got off the bus after three days of travelling, I felt an immense relief. I finally arrived to a city I that I wanted to see for a long time. Medellín is one of the best-known places in the country, and the opinions I heard from people who knew it made me feel a lot of interest for a long time.

Yo mejor me quedo... — I better stay...

A un día de mi cumpleaños, el objetivo de llegar a la costa atlántica empezaba a palidecer frente a mis enormes ganas de conocer un poco más de esa ciudad. Así que de la mano de un primo, unos amigos de la familia, y una hermosa amiga que no había tenido el placer de conocer en persona, mi estancia en Medellín se extendió y se volvió realmente hermosa y memorable. Fueron como unas vacaciones que había necesitado por mucho tiempo.

One day shy of my birthday, the goal of getting to the Atlantic coast was beginning to pale in comparison to my enormous desire to get to know a little more of the city. So with the help of a cousin, some family friends, and a beautiful friend I had not had the pleasure of meeting in person, my stay in Medellín was extended and became truly beautiful and memorable. It was like a holiday I had needed for a long time.

La separación inevitable — An unavoidable separation

Medellín me dejó fascinado por su gente, por su clima, por sus paisajes, y por el evidente desarrollo arquitectónico que compone su estructura urbana preciosísima. El hogar de los "paisas" es un lugar al que definitivamente quiero regresar tan pronto como pueda. Me enamoré perdidamente de Medellín desde el momento en el que empecé a conocerle.

Luego de una corta, pero satisfactoria estancia, me fui de la ciudad de Medellín sin querer hacerlo. Temía que pudiera estar dejando atrás lo mejor de mi paso por Colombia, pero mi siguiente destino sería enormemente gratificante. En ese momento me dirigía a un portal que me conectaría con el mundo entero. Finalmente partí hacia Cartagena.

Medellín left me fascinated by its people, by its climate, by its landscapes, and by the obvious architectural development that makes up its beautiful urban structure. The home of the "paisas" is a place I definitely want to return to as soon as I can. I fell madly in love with Medellín from the moment I got to know it.

After a short, but satisfying stay, I left Medellín without wanting to. I feared that I might be leaving behind the best of my time in Colombia, but my next destination would be hugely rewarding. At that moment I was heading for a portal that would connect me to the whole world. I finally set off for Cartagena.
