Hi guys!
I want to use this opportunity to wish everyone in this community and hive as a whole a happy happy new year and I hope we witness more years together. Right now in Ghana, it’s still dry season and In a few months the raining season will kick in and farmers will start their respective farming activities. As farmers we try to learn from our past years mistake and make sure that they don’t happen in the following year.
Last year 2022, we made lots of mistakes that one way or another reduced our harvest. I want to use this platform to lay them down and hopefully others don’t repeat the same mistakes. Normally these mistakes are bound to happen if it’s your first time cultivating a certain crop. Like what happens to us when we cultivated our soya beans last year.
Firstly, when cultivating a crop the first thing you need to do is consider the type of land you want to plant the crop. Depending on what you plant then you go for the respective land. For example say you want to plant Rice. The rice needs great amount of water so you don’t go looking for a land that can’t contain water because of its texture.
You need to look for a land that has the ability to hold water for a while. So that when it rains, the just doesn’t dry out easily but is retained for the rice to use. This is very important we learnt that in the hard way when we planted our soya beans.
The second thing I believe is very key is, make sure you are planting with the right seeds. Most people just think to plant with any seeds but that is wrong there are some seeds that when you plant them are going to grow into a strong and yield a lot. Whiles others do the opposite. I say this because when we were planting the soya beans, we opted for some seeds to plant and when they were ripe for harvesting, because of excess sun the pods were bursting causing the seeds to fall out.
Later on, we were told we bought the wrong seeds. Because there are some seeds that do not burst even when the sun is scorching. If we had bought the right seeds most of them wouldn’t have stayed on the ground.
Lastly, do not plant late. I should have put this first because it’s very important but I just wanted to do the arrangement in a liner manner. A lot of famers do this very often. From where i come from we don’t always get the rains for the whole of the year it stops at a certain point. So as a farmer it’s your duty to know the right time to plant your crops. When you plant them late that is when you plant crops like rice, soya beans at a time where the rains are about to stop it will reach a time when the plants would need water but there wouldn’t be rain.
And this would be a big blow to you. Because your crops wouldn’t yield to your expectation. So it’s good to know the right time to plant your crops. Again, we fell victim to this last year with our soya beans. At some point they needed water but the rains had stopped.
I think I will stop here for now and I hope you after reading you will pick one or two ideas from it. I will see you soon and thank you for your support.
