This write up follows @vincentnijman/wet-wet-wet.
If you haven't already done so, read that first.
It has now been raining almost non stop for 4 days and I am relieved to say that we are nearing the end of the downpour.
Only about 24 hours left of relatively light rain ( if we can trust the weather forecast ), before the sun returns.
.
No matter how important all this water is for nature - and our garden - we don't need a 100 hours of it in a row and it has been very cold ( close to freezing ) most of the time it rained
The cold and humidity combined are just a bit troppo/ too much. Not just for us humans but also for the flora and fauna around us. It's a little bit of a shock to the system, to say the least. Especially after it seemed like Spring had already started.
.
This is me, a week ago:
.
And this is our washing ( that we handwash. No mains electricity, so no washing machine ), when it still wanted/ managed to dry...
.
And the following horror movie-like photo shows the room that we call our bedroom. It was taken by me, yesterday night, as seen from the bed.
You see the water running along the wall, coming through holes in the ceiling. You can also see a plastic sheet covering Clare's sewing table...
My rain jacket is only waterproof up till a certain point. It does not like heavy rain. Check out my wellies and a container with hand sawn firewood ( from trees from our own land )...
Our old well is filling up nicely. It needs some work though and is pretty small.
I calculated today that it probqably only contains about 500 liters.
Our woodstove trying its utmost best to warm up and dry out the room but hardly succeeding. It is pretty good at warming up tea and/ or a kettle to fill hot water bottles with though..
Talking about the latter... As if it isn't wet enough yet, one of our hot water bottles burst, in bed, this afternoon. I acted quickly but it took me two hours and a lot of hassle to mostly dry out five layers of bedding ( in front of the wood burner and the oven ). I also bumped over a bucket with water, on the kitchen floor. Dirty water that I had previously mobbed up.

And here's another photo of the bedroom. At the left you see the foot of the bed, covered in plastic, as the drips even landed there. It also shows a number of bowls and buckets.
And here's another couple of photos of wetness...
Luckily, our floors are cement and so are our walls, so the damage isn't too bad. If we had the money, we would tear this whole building down and build a new one. But we don't, right now. In fact, we hardly have funds for any type of renovation.
More on that in 's latest post where she also talks about why she left our place, yesterday afternoon, and left me behind to deal with the dripping roof and the cat(s).
This is our first couple of days apart in 5 months and only the second time since we got together, 1 year and 7 months ago.
Comunque/ anyhow, homesteading on a microbudget is not for the faint of heart but there's still plenty to enjoy too.
It is still raining outside and drops are (mostly) landing in bowls and buckets behind me. The woodburner is trying to warm me up ( and our bedroom ) and I am about to make myself another savoury pancake or two.
bietole from our garden and a pancake...
Meanwhile, Clare is still in another city, hours away, living the #campinglife in her old house; dry but with hardly any (kitchen) supplies.
We are apart but mentally connected and modern phones ( when they work ) help too.
The rain is supposed to stop tomorrow morning and make place for the sun Hopefully a week or so of nice Spring weather
It is much needed, as we have a lot of things to dry out. It will also make things quite a bit easier.
Clare asked me to tell her when the rain ceases and she will return home. She might need another day to wrap things up at her old place though so we will probably re-unite dopo domani.
I hope you keep your spirits up, wherever you are in the world.
To Be Convinued...
