Ratargul Reservoir is a freshwater reservoir located in Goainghat in Sylhet district in Bangladesh. This is the first freshwater wetland in Bangladesh, but several other freshwater wetlands have been found in Bangladesh since then. There are very few freshwater wetlands in the world, Ratargul wetland is one of them. It is known as one of the best tourist centers of Bangladesh.
Ratargul wetlands are inundated for half or more of the year. Waterlogging is common in these forests during monsoons. Apart from the rainy season, the height of water here is about 10 feet. Ratargul Swamp Forest is rich in flora and fauna. Notable plants here include Hijal, Chatim, Arjuna, Kadam etc.
Notable fauna of this forest includes a variety of snakes, birds, monkeys and fish. Being submerged in water, this forest has a strange beauty. Forest trees are mostly inundated with water. Boats were the only means of transport here. You can enjoy the unique natural beauty of the forest by riding a boat. It rains more in July. Rainy season is the best time for night travel.
