Today I want to show you the atmosphere of a Champions League night in Madrid, the capital of Spain.

In Madrid, the Champions League usually takes place at two stadiums: one is home to a great team for tourists (which I won’t mention), and the other is the Metropolitano Stadium. We’ll be visiting the latter… the home of Atlético de Madrid.

I think whoever accompanies me will be lucky. (I think)… they’ll experience a great soccer atmosphere in a stadium… where thousands gather—those who love exciting soccer…

If you don’t like soccer or crowds or both… you can approach this visit to the Metropolitano Stadium like an anthropologist studying a human phenomenon. You’ll witness a great catharsis in which the stands project both their hopes and their fears onto a green backdrop where 22 millionaires in shorts chase after a ball.

The guide for this publication belongs to the third generation of a “colchonera” family (Atlético de Madrid fans are known, among other things, as “colchoneros”), so this tour is informed by an understanding of a club that, to paraphrase Galeano, has been trying to stop being Atlético de Madrid for far too long.

The Metropolitano Stadium is a recent construction and is the latest link in a long chain of the club’s moves to various locations on the outskirts of the capital. According to information provided by the club itself, the club’s various venues, starting with the oldest, are: the Campo del Retiro, the Campo de O’Donnell, the Estadio Metropolitano, the Estadio Vicente Calderón, and the current Metropolitano, inaugurated in 2017.

The chronology is incorrect; the Vallecas Stadium is missing, a place where Atlético de Madrid (then Atlético de Aviación) experienced one of the most memorable moments in its history, winning the first two leagues held after the Civil War.

The fact that the club itself is unaware of its own history is yet another example of how this Atlético de Madrid is determined to forget what Atlético de Madrid truly is.

Leaving my grumpy quips behind, let’s head to the new Estadio Metropolitano. The stadium is located in the southern part of Spain’s capital, in the San Blas-Canillejas district. The best way to get there is by Metro; the Estadio Metropolitano stop (L7) drops you right at the gates of the home of the Atlético family.

Hoy les quiero mostrar el ambiente que se vive en una noche de Champions en Madrid, la capital de España.

En Madrid, el torneo de la Champions aterriza habitualmente en dos estadios, uno es la sede de un gran equipo para turistas (que no voy a mencionar) y el otro es el estadio Metropolitano. Éste último estadio será el que visitaremos… la sede del Atlético de Madrid.

Quien me acompañe creo que estará de suerte (creo)… va a conocer un gran ambiente de fútbol, en un estadio … Donde acuden a millares, los que gustan del fútbol de emoción...

Si no te gustan ni el fútbol o las multitudes o ambas cosas… puedes tomarte esta visita por el estadio Metropolitano como la del antropólogo que estudia un fenómeno humano. Serás testigo de una gran catarsis en la que la grada proyecta, tanto sus anhelos como sus paranoias, sobre un fondo verde por el que corretean 22 millonarios en pantalones cortos detrás de una esfera.

El guía de esta publicación pertenece a la tercera generación de una familia colchonera (a la afición del Atlético de Madrid, entre otros adjetivos, se la conoce como colchonera) por lo que esta visita se hace desde el conocimiento de un club que, parafraseando a Galeano, se empeña en dejar de ser el Atlético de Madrid desde hace ta demasiado tiempo.

El Estadio Metropolitano es de reciente construcción y es el último eslabón de una larga cadena de desplazamientos del Club por diferentes lugares de la periferia de la capital. Según la información que ofrece el propio club, las diferentes sedes del club, comenzando por la más antigua, serían: el Campo del Retiro, el Campo de O'Donnell, el Estadio Metropolitano, el Estadio Vicente Calderón y el actual Metropolitano inaugurado en 2017.

La cronología es errónea, falta el estadio de Vallecas, un lugar en el que el Atlético de Madrid (Entonces, Atlético de Aviación) vivió uno de los momentos más memorables de su historia, ganando las dos primeras ligas celebradas después de la Guerra Civil.

Que desde el propio club no se conozco la historia del propio club, es una expresión más de como este Atlético de Madrid se empeña en olvidar qué es el Atlético de Madrid.

Dejando ya mis chascarrillos de gruñón nos vamos al nuevo Estadio Metropolitano. El estadio se encuentra ubicado en el sur de la capital de España, en el distrito San Blas-Canillejas. La mejor manera de llegar allí es en Metro, la parada de Estadio Metropolitano (L7) deja al viajero a las puertas de la gran casa de la familia atlética.

Champions League matches are held at night, a time when the stadium—which has appeared in previous posts—takes on a completely different look from what it appears to be during the day, resembling a massive spaceship that has just landed. And just like in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, a crowd of the chosen few, amid flashing lights and colorful sounds, gathers to greet it.

I try to arrive, if possible, when the stadium is nearly empty—a venue that doesn’t fill up until just a few minutes before the match begins, since most of the fans linger in the nearby bars until just before kickoff.

Los partidos de Champions se celebran por la noche, horas en las que el Estadio, que ya ha aparecido antes en alguna publicación, cambia radicalmente de aspecto respecto a como puede verse durante el día, tomando el aspecto de una gran nave espacial que acaba de aterrizar. Y como en Encuentros en la tercera fase, una multitud de elegidos, entre luces parpadeantes y sonidos de colores, acude a su encuentro.

Procuro llegar, si me es posible, cuando el estadio está casi vacío, un recinto que no se llena hasta que casi comienza el partido, ya que gran parte de la afición se entretiene en los bares aledaños al estadio hasta pocos minutos antes del inicio del partido.

The atmosphere, while not quite that of the Vicente Calderón—a stadium that used to shake to the rhythm of the fans’ jumping and chanting—is still pretty intense (though probably not as intense as in Latin America).

From here on, I’ll divide this post into two parts. We’ll separate the experiences inside the stadium from those outside during a Champions League match. I’ve collected the photos and recordings from various Champions League matches, selecting the images and sounds as if they were from a single soccer game.

Once inside the stadium, the pre-match atmosphere begins with a ritual that’s repeated every night of European competition. Light show, an AC/DC soundtrack to energize the already enthusiastic fans, applause for the home team’s lineup, indifference or boos toward the opposing team’s lineup, and a welcome for Atlético with an a cappella rendition of the Atlético anthem accompanied by scarves waving in the wind, boos during the Champions League anthem… and I’m not sure if I’m forgetting any part of this ritual.

Once the game kicks off… what you’d expect at any soccer match happens… the “oohs,” the cheers, the whistles, and the applause fill the stadium for 90 minutes, until the referee blows the whistle to end the match.

El ambiente, aunque no es el del Vicente Calderón, estadio que temblaba al ritmo de los saltos y cantos de la afición, es bastante caliente (seguramente no tanto como los de Latino América).

A partir de aquí, dividiré la publicación en dos partes. Separaremos las vivencias de dentro con las de fuera del estadio en un partido de Champions. Las fotografías y grabaciones las he recogido en varios partidos de Champions, seleccionando las fotografías y sonidos como si se tratara de un sólo partido de fútbol.

Una vez adentro del Estadio, el previo del partido comienza con un ritual que se repite todas la noches de competición europea. Juego de luces, banda sonora de AC/DC para animar a la ya animada afición, aplauso a la alineación del equipo, indiferencia o pitos hacia la alineación del equipo rival, recibimiento del Atlético con el canto a capela del himno del Atlético acompañado de bufandas al viento, pitos al himno de la Champions… y no sé si se me olvida algún elemento de este ritual.

Una vez que da inicio el juego…. Ocurre lo esperado en cualquier partido de fútbol... los uys!, los cantos de ánimos, los pitos y los aplausos inundan el recinto durante 90 minutos, hasta que el árbitro pita el final del encuentro.

Outside the stadium—save for a few isolated spots where clusters of boisterous fans have gathered—the silence and calm are interrupted only by the chants of the supporters watching the match from the stands.

The Metropolitano Stadium, with a capacity of over 70,000 spectators, features a vast fan zone encircling the venue. Located within this area are the club’s merchandise outlets, various food and beverage establishments—some permanent, others temporary—and street vendors selling everything from drinks to Atlético de Madrid-related memorabilia.

As you stroll through the stadium's surroundings, you will encounter—among other things—various elements that serve as reminders of the club's history.

Along the so-called "Walk of Legends" (Paseo de las Leyendas), numerous metal plaques embedded in the ground pay tribute to Atleti's "legends." The word "legends" is placed in quotation marks here, as some true legends are conspicuously absent, while certain plaques currently on display arguably honor individuals who do not quite fit that description.

On Luis Aragonés Avenue, we’ll come across the statue dedicated to Atlético de Madrid’s greatest coach and one of the best players in our history: Luis Aragonés, a key figure in the club’s history.

Leaving Mr. Luis Aragonés behind, we’ll come across two other symbols of the team: a military plane, in homage to Atlético de Aviación, and a statue depicting a bear and a strawberry tree, symbols of the city of Madrid that also appear—along with the seven stars of the Big Dipper—on the Atlético de Madrid crest.

En los exteriores del Estadio, salvo algún punto excepcional en el que se agrupan algunos bulliciosos aficionados, el silencio y la calma sólo son interrumpidos por los cánticos de los aficionados que están viendo el partido en las gradas.

El Estadio Metropolitano, con una capacidad para más de 70.000 espectadores, cuenta con una gran área de animación que rodea el estadio. En ésta se encuentran los puntos de venta del Merchandising del club, establecimientos de hostelería, unos permanentes y otros no, y los vendedores ambulantes que venden tanto bebidas como artículos relacionados con el Atlético de Madrid.

Caminando por los alrededores del estadio nos vamos a encontrar, entre otras cosas, con diversos elementos que nos remiten a la historia del club.

En el llamado “Paseo de las leyendas”, sobre el suelo numerosas placas de metal recuerdan a las “leyendas” del Atleti. Las “leyendas” van entrecomilladas pues faltan algunas leyendas y sobran algunas de las placas de las expuestas.

En la Avenida Luis Aragonés nos encontraremos con la estatua dedicada al mejor entrenador del Atlético de Madrid y uno de los mejores jugadores de nuestra historia: D. Luis Aragonés, parte muy importante de la mitología del club Atlético de Madrid.

Dejando atrás a D. Luis Aragonés nos toparemos con otros dos símbolos del equipo. Un avión militar, en homenaje al Atlético de Aviación y una estatua representando a una osa y un madroño, símbolo de la ciudad de Madrid y que es parte también, con las siete estrellas de la Osa Mayor, del escudo del Atlético de Madrid.

As I finish writing this post, the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 hasn’t been played yet. In the first leg, Atlético’s “Millonarios” beat Tottenham 5–2; in a few hours, I’ll find out whether my Atleti has advanced to the next round or not.

En este momento, cuando estoy terminando de escribir esta publicación, todavía no se ha jugado el partido de vuelta de los octavos de final de la Liga de Campeones. En el primer partido, los millonarios del Atlético se habían impuesto por 5-2 a los del Tottenham, en unas horas conoceré si mi Atleti pasó, o no lo hizo, a la siguiente ronda.
