In another blog post we talked about the medicinal benefits of the Hibiscus Flower. Today we explore and actually cook with the Roselle Red plant. The Roselle Red Hibiscus is rich in antioxidants, high vitamin C content, can aid in lowering blood pressure and much more.
But how do you eat it? How do you prepare it so that the family can enjoy it?
We titled our blog "taste of Thailand with the Roselle Red Hibiscus" because we bring you two beautiful ways to enjoy with a hint of Thai ingredients.
The Roselle Hibiscus flower has the most beautiful red flower bulbs that can be used for your food choice or drink. Today we want to explore how to make a wonderful Thai Tea and Ice Cream with this beautiful plant -- Thai Style :-)
We will first share how we make our ice cream from our red tea. The ice cream color below comes out almost purple in it's presentation. The ice cream is sour from the flower juice and the coconut milk makes it nice and creamy. First we make the juice.
Ingredients for Ice Cream:
- 1 cup coconut milk,
- juice from drink below (1 cup) and mix and put in freezer for 6 hours
- then mix in blender to get your ice cream
Ingredients for drink (make this drink before ice cream):
-Dry Roselle flower pedals (1/2 cup)
-boil in water for 30 minutes - color should come out dark red and then drain
-then add honey (1/2 cup), water (2 cups)
-1/4 teaspoon of salt
-let it all cool down
The drink is not only refreshing, but as you can see the richness of the leaves makes a beautiful tea.
The leaves are used as the base of the tea and ice cream. As with all recipes, you can tweak with your ingredients to add the desired amount of sweetness. Below, we add our honey after boiling the leaves and straining.
Looking at the Roselle Red Hibiscus you can see the deep coloration of the flowers that is rich in goodness.
Thank you so much for reading and learning about our little recipe. I hope you enjoyed.
