I hope all of you are well as you sit to read this. It's been a fun ride these last few months here at Kindred Acres. We've done a lot of homeschooling, family time, a little gardening....yes, winter gardening, and a lot of planning.
The days have been so warm here, even now in January the day time temps are in the upper 60F and some days in the 70F. We have a few nights coming up where the night time temps will drop down to the 30F and even as low as 20F but they are short-lived. Our winter garden is doing great! Apart from how much rain we have gotten, everything is thriving. The weather does have some of our perennials confused though.
January and February are typically our coldest months of the year but this year they have yet to show us any cold. Our banana tree is starting to leaf out!
Now this isn't a horrible thing. Once the cold snap finally decides to show up they will just die back again and then come back to life again in spring.
Our blueberry bushes on the other hand....this could be disastrous.
They have begun to bud out! Once the cold finally does come the buds will freeze and fall off. There is a chance this could effect fruit production for next year. All we can do is hope that doesn't happen.
Even our elderberry bushes are starting to leaf out.
And with all the rains that have come there are thousands of mushrooms popping up all over the food forest. I spied a little fairy ring of shrooms under a sweetgum tree.
We really do need a good cold snap. The cold helps kill some of the fungus and diseases that linger in the soil, pests, and some plants need a certain number of chill hours. That being said, the annual winter garden is appreciating the weather. Take a look at a few pics from the winter garden. We didn't do a large one this year. Just something small that doesn't really require much maintenance at all. I wanted a nice slow season to relax and enjoy quality time with Kaliah. Quality time to enjoy the winter months where we should be retreating into our homes, taking time to reflect, and taking time to rest is so important. While I do appreciate all of this, I also feel it necessary to eat the freshest and most nutrient-dense foods during a time our bodies need the most support. That is why we did a small, maintenance-free, winter garden. You'll notice there is quite the variety too. Mixing up nutrients we intake is so important. Our bodies need an array of vitamins and minerals. When the days are short as they are, and we are getting less sun then we should, this is when we need the most support through the foods we take in.
I hope you all are enjoying the fresh new start of this brand new year. No matter where you are in the world, if it is your summer or if it is your winter, take time to go within....to reflect, and take some time to just BE. Thank you for checking out our blog. Sending love and light....
