The more I learn about the community I am within, the more I find myself enjoying the diversity of it. Not only have I learnt about the general ways and pecularities of the Netherlands, but also how much better it is with the different cultures and people interwining in it. Suriname is one of the places that I am learning so much about and simply falling in love with it...
And among all that learning and loving I suddenly remembered how my life had changed in an instant.
I used to find so many things very interesting. I loved learning and expandin my knowledge about anything and everything. As a matter of fact, blogging about all the things, sharing it on hive, finding people who share similar interests and reading their work and interacting with them...that had become a major part of my Hive journey.
Going out and finding a new restaurant, tearing down the food and cuisine, having the freedom of putting on the blockchain with my personal take on it, and having a discussion about it with other foodies...that was always fun!
The same with gaming, art and what not. I never thought I would buy a drawing pad and try to get better at it. But my Hive journey made me do it.
But in an instant, as soon as the war started, it seems like I lost interest in the anything and everything. It has been months since I have Hived about anything positive. Or even had the urge to do something and hive about it. But I miss that feeling of finding that undeniable interest in somehting and sharing it here...
So, getting back to Suriname. I first met a very kind hearted Surinamese person in my first workplace, yes the one with the physical labor thing. He was my shift supervisor. One of the nicest people I have met here. And then I kept coming across people from Suriname and they were all so incredibly nice, friendly, and wonderful.
Now also I have colleagues from Suriname and learn about their beautiful country almost everyday. Among the first things I learnt about Suriname was their food. A delicious assortment of food that has been inspired from all the different cultures in Suriname. The cuisine is so interesting and broad.
It is a very small country and they found their independence not too long ago. I hope someday I can go to Suriname and fully enjoy the Surinamese expereience.
Recently, I came across one of my coworkers in the street with a very peculiar looking snack in her hand. She told me I had to try it - Bara, a Surinamese snack.
While I ordered the Bara I could not keep away from the "kip roll" and "kip roti". The Bara came with a topping of "mango chutney" - which is probably some sort of pickled mango with spices.
The vendor made the Bara fresh and it was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It paired so well with the mango chutney. Unfortunately, no pics... Maybe next time ;)
The pictures above you see is the Roti Kip. It is basically flat bread and a huge serving of chicken with potatoes and some other veggies, all spiced heavily - especially with turmeric.
By the time I was a few bites in, my fingernails were already yellow. And before you mention a knife and a fork, this food is supposed to be eaten by hand! It tastes soooo good! Unbelievably delicious and rich in flavor!
The kip roll is the same thing but in a roll. Almost like a doner or shawarma but with different filling and a different sort of flat bread.
In the future I would love to explore the Surinamese cusine further. And hopefully there'll be more pictures and push me towards my old blogging style.
