Today here with what I'm assuming is one of MANY posts about Thanksgiving meals!
Our First Turkey
One of the things that we've never done ourselves is cook a Thanksgiving dinner for ourselves! We've always gone somewhere to eat but this year for one reason or another, we hosted it at home!
I've wanted to do it ourselves for a while but it's easier to go somewhere to have the meal where they do the work. We don't have a large place where we live so we couldn't host a bunch of people. Things change though and we ended up needing to cook our own dinner. We did just that! We bought a mid-sized turkey since we wouldn't be feeding anyone besides ourselves this time around.
Unfortunately it was still a little frozen so taking out the internals wasn't that easy lol. We didn't do anything this year except cook the turkey. I know that the neck and other internals are great for making a gravy but we are taking things one step at a time!
It was nice and seasoned up now! We added onion and apple to the inside of the turkey to see if it could give it some flavor. I didn't want to cook stuffing inside it since I know that it takes a lot longer for that to finish and there's potential for getting food poisoning if it wasn't cooked to the right temperature. We also have an electric oven and personally I've had a hell of a time keeping the food we cook at the right temperature. Gas ovens are far better for this type of stuff in my experience. One day!
We let it cook for 3 hours before we did anything with it. We covered the pan in a tinfoil tent so that it could cook more inside and that worked well. I pulled the tinfoil off here so that we could crisp up the skin some! Thankfully I had a meat thermometer, otherwise I wouldn't have felt comfortable cooking it just by look lol.
One of the things I had to do was take some of the stuff out from inside. The apples and onions were great but I don't know if it was preventing the middle from getting up to temperature so I scooped most of it out and popped it back in. The important temperature that I keep reading for the breast and other meats to achieve is 150 degrees Fahrenheit. It was shy of that for a while so I gave this a whirl!
One of the other things I realized I couldn't find until after it was all done, was the giblets hahaha. I took out the neck and all that but was thinking where the heck are the giblets? I guess they put them on the other side of the bird! I didn't know but if I had known, it would probably have led to a better cooking outcome than leaving them there. Oh well, lesson learned that's for sure! I found them before making the mistake of biting into something like that lol
Thankfully I think the turkey came out pretty damn good! It was a bit on the dry side since I was determined not to undercook it but that's okay, the gravy makes up for that!
The process overall was great and I'm glad that we finally got the chance to cook our own turkey, even if the circumstances weren't the best! I'm thinking this will be the start of our own tradition and hope that it grows from here!
