Hello, Hivers and foodies bees in the Hive! A happy week to you all.
It's been some time since I've posted in this community. Lately, I haven't been very inspired in the kitchen.
However, today I am not going to share something I cooked but ate. Before the pandemic, I was on a visit to Istanbul for a few days. And a couple of days ago, a friend of mine, who will have to make a stopover there, asked me to recommend places to eat kebabs. A bit of a crazy question, considering the least that Istanbul lacks is places to eat a good kebab.
As I was going to share with her the places I had chosen to eat after my little research when I went there, I thought I could turn it into a post and share it with the Foodies Bee Hive community. Perhaps a foodie bee can use the information too. And I will store some of my travel food memories on the blockchain.
Before I continue:
Disclaimer: I have no relationship with the places I mention below. My comments and opinions are part of my own experience.
On our trip, we tried different types of kebabs. And here, I tell you where we ate them.
Cag Kebab
One of the places we went to eat kebab was the Sehzade Cag Kebap. According to The New York Times, they make the best Cag Kebab in town.
In the Cag Kebab, or as it's called in Turkish Cağ kebabı, the meat is cooked in a horizontal skewer with a wood fire. Unlike those in which the meat is cooked on a vertical skewer that we are more used to seeing.
This type of kebab is from the Erzurum province in Turkey.
The Cag Kebab is made with fatty lamb meat. The meat is marinated for hours in a seasoning made of onion, sweet basil, black pepper, and salt before cooking.
In the Sehzade Cag Kebap, you won't find any other dish on the menu. People go there for the Cag kebab. And they are so yummy.
They served the meat in a skewer with lavash flatbread, fresh tomatoes, cucumber parsley, raw seasoned onions, lime, and a mezze (a starter) called Ezme.
Ezme it's a starter and its name means crushed. It is made with tomatoes, onion, green pepper, parsley, garlic, lemon juice, pomegranate molasses, red pepper paste, olive oil, and salt.
This place is at Hocapasa Sokak No: 6 Sirkeci.
Kebab with mezze feast
Another place where we ate kebab was Bilice Kebap.
The kebabs were delicious, and the place was nice. But the highlight is that they serve the kebabs on a huge tray with a variety of exquisite mezzes.
Mezze is the name given to the starters.
In this place, the menu has many options. Among the meats, as I remember you could choose between lamb and chicken. We had lamb kebab. It was served with lavash flatbread and with a wide sort of mezzes. We had our meal with Ayran, a yogurt beverage, which in this place was served traditionally in a metal cup.
This place is at Asmali Mescit Mahallesi, Asmali Mescit Caddesi No: 8 Beyoğlu.
Doner Kebab
The third place I am going to mention is where we ate doner kebab in a very popular place located in the Beşiktaş neighborhood. It is the Tarihi Karadeniz Doner which is on a busy pedestrian street.
There are always people waiting to eat, and there is not much space to sit down as it is always crowded. So you'll see people eating on the street.
In the picture is my husband's sandwich, which he had already had a good bite of before I took the picture. ;)
And I don't know if they serve the best doner in town, but it was very tasty.
The place is at Sinanpaşa, No:, Mumcu Bakkal Sokağı No:6, 34353 Beşiktaş.
