For all those vegan or plant-based eaters in Cebu, fret no more! The search is over as we can now enjoy a guilt-free, delicious vegan buffet at VGN WHOLEFOODS CAFE!
Since I switched to a healthy meal plan (salads and shakes) 3 months ago, I have been mindful of what I eat. I've lost 15 lbs. since then. However, there were countless times that I just want to break from this cycle and eat delicious food! I do give myself a treat once in a while by indulging in a cup of ice cream or some chocolates but I've been wanting to eat at a buffet restaurant for some time now. However, this seems to elude me.
One day, my dance classmate and friend mentioned this vegan restaurant out of nowhere and wanted to check the place out. Luckily, after our dance class, we decided to drop by this restaurant since it was close by. Located at Molave St. Kamputhaw, Cebu City, it was just a 20-minute walk from where we were but we opted to take a taxi ride for less than 10 minutes since my feet were already sore from dancing.
Situated along a narrow street, it wasn't noticeable at first. One has to be on the lookout for their signage! It wasn't a huge restaurant as I thought it would be but was a simple and cozy café serving vegan food! I love that they have decorated its surrounding enclosure with vine plants (not sure if real ones) but it helps the place feel good.
With a few tables outside and a couple more inside the small air-conditioned room. The place can only accommodate about 20 people at a time if I'm not mistaken.
Despite the simplicity of the interior of the place, one still feels at home when one gets to settle inside. And it's the food that makes people flock to this vegan cafe! If we arrived an hour later, we wouldn't be able to dine in as they were fully booked at that time. Yes, you have to make reservations beforehand because, despite the limited space, people go here just to have a taste of their delicious food!
For as low as Php 349 or $6.23, one can already enjoy their Wholefoods Plant-Based Buffet every Saturday! Just make sure to check in with them or visit their social media pages for a more updated schedule.
During our visit, there were 6 dishes to choose from for the main courses. Plant-based desserts and fresh juice were also served. I mean the options are many and I decided to try them all!
🍽 Main Course:
Vegetable Salad
Mushroom Sisig
Sinugbang Vegchon
Vegan (Tofu) Caldereta
Veggie Lumpia
Vegetable Soup
🍸Drinks:
Cucumber Lemonade
🍰Dessert:
Vegan Moist Choco Cake Slices
The Mushroom Sisig was so delicious! The typical Filipino Sisig is made from pig parts and chicken liver dipped in a mayo dressing topped with an egg. And it's one of the many go-to sizzling dishes people order from fast-food restaurants or eateries here. However, VGN cleverly replaced the meat ingredients with mushrooms! Now, that takes it to a unique level of making a traditional dish into a healthy one.
Let's talk about Sinugbang Vegchon! If we were to compare it with the traditional Sinugbang Lechon, it's quite different and unique! So instead of using meat as the ingredient, they used tapioca! Not sure what else they added to this dish but it's completely meat-free and tastes just as good as the traditional one.
Their Veggie Lumpia is one of the popular dishes that their customers can't get enough of! The filling is packed with a variety of vegetables like carrots and potatoes. Not just that, they also used the type of lumpia wrapper with no salt in it. Paired with the homemade sauce, you will surely come back for it!
Those were my top 3 dishes that I enjoyed eating. I should mention I went back to the buffet table 3 times as I indulge myself with all of their delicious vegan food! Besides the food, the customer service was superb! All their staff was friendly and accommodating! I'm coming back here!
Before I and my friend left this awesome VGN Wholefoods Cafe, I decided to ask the owner why he started this business. He mentioned that 8 years ago, he was rushed to the hospital for a serious medical condition due to unhealthy life choices. After which, he changed his life! He noticed that there were only a few eateries or options for people to buy or eat vegan food here in Cebu. And so he shared his passion for healthy food by opening his café or restaurant. He has been running this vegan café for about a year now and we hope for him more success!
