Hello everyone and all members of foodies be hive community, how are you guys today? May you all always be healthy and happy, because those two things are the most important for us. The past few days, there has been a lot of news in my country about the increasing number of people who are positive for the Omicron covid-19 pandemic but accompanied by the good news they are recovering faster. I pray and hope that everything about this pandemic will end soon, because I don't want to be quarantined or locked down so I can't go to restaurants, street food outlets or coffee shops.
This time, I want to share my experience visiting one of the city parks in my city. The city park has a hawker center for a variety of very delicious street food at low prices. There are various foods and drinks sold at the hawker center, such as meatballs, padang satay, pecal noodles, potato chips, and chinese snacks. This Chinese snack caught my attention, because it seems that the food they sell I have never tried and it is also difficult to find halal Chinese food in my city. I also bought some food at one of the food vendors, named Apin 888.
Apin 888 Chinese Snack
Apin 888 is a street food seller who uses a motorbike to sell his food. All the food is placed in one place behind the bench on the motorbike. The seller is a middle-aged Chinese man, he is very friendly and explains many things, such as what foods are the favorites and choices of many people and the seller's experience when his business was covered for a famous television culinary show.
I asked him why he used the triple number 8. According to him, the belief of the Chinese community that the number 8 means that it will not break and continue to be connected. The hope is that by using that number, the sustenance and profit obtained will not stop or be interrupted. To my knowledge, the number eight is indeed popular as a business name, in my city there are also several companies or community businesses that use the element eight, such as supermarket 88 or workshop 88.
Apin 888 Chinese Snack sells various typical Chinese snacks such as round fried radish cakes (lo bu gai), bakwan (chai thau kwe), risol, dimsum, tofu roll, shrimp roll, spring rolls and ci cong fan. Actually all these foods have Chinese names, but because the seller was too quick to explain and I'm not familiar with the language, so I only remember a few names. After discussing I decided to order ci cong fan and fried spring rolls.
Ci Cong Fan
The way of serving all these foods is very simple and easy. All types of snacks sold here are priced at IDR 10K for 3 pcs snacks and we can mix them. After that, the seller will cut the snack into small pieces using scissors, put it in a small plastic bag and sprinkle it with delicious chili sauce.
This is Ci Cong Fan, shaped like a kwetiau but made with a wide sheet. Ci Cong Fan uses the same ingredients as kwetiau, namely rice flour but the way of serving and eating it is different. I really enjoy this food, it's my experience to eat Ci Cong Fan and the taste is very delicious and the price is also cheap.
The original taste of Ci Cong Fan is bland, like the taste of rice. Ci Cong Fan is served with chili sauce, fried onions and soy sauce. According to the seller, one of the most important components in each of these snacks is the quality of the chili sauce. He uses fresh chilies and always maintains the quality of the sauce or chili sauce. Many people also come specifically to buy chili sauce to enjoy at home.
Fried Spring Rolls
This snack is quite popular and easy to find in several places, especially Chinese food. There are also various other terms about spring rolls, as many foods look similar in other countries. I also enjoy this food, it's savory but the chili sauce makes a different dimension of taste.
Fresh Sugarcane
After I was satisfied with my meal, I went to find a refreshing drink. There were several choices at that time such as ice cendol, ice sugar cane, coconut ice, and some soft drinks. I chose to drink sugarcane ice because it looked so refreshing.
Sugarcane juice is a drink produced from sugarcane extract which is pressed using a press. This drink is quite popular in several countries that have sugar cane plantations, such as Southeast Asia, South Asia or East Asia. Sugar cane is used as a raw material to produce sugar, and of course this drink has a natural sweet taste. I always like to drink sugarcane juice, especially when it's freshly pressed, it tastes fresher.
Okay, this is my culinary experience this time. See you again in the next story.
